Bit of a sad thread I know, bear with me

I'm on target this year for about 30k miles, I've got a 306 diesel estate which just does the miles and returns 60 mpg if I don't forget I'm not button.

It is fk boring though, as commuting in a diesel is. 156's seem to depreciate like a stone. Well they up with the mileage, all Italian jokes ( :-P) aside?!

There are plenty of 156's about with high mileage so i would say yes, then can. Mine is on 114k for example.

However if you're doing 30k per annum be aware that the Twinspark engines need a cambelt every 36k miles. Doing a cambelt nearly every year would be a tad annoying i think! I think the Diesels and V6 engines are better for this though.

30,000 miles a year! wow, that's a lot of miles. Do you have to pay for your own fuel?

I do over 50k / year. It's not in any way unusual.

That is actually below average mileage for the age.

They are much stronger than legend suggests, as long as they are looked after properly and are great value. Go for it. yes

I had a 2.0 twin spark which was a one owner car from new, Full Alfa SH, and 90000 miles.
I used it every weekend to do Portsmouth to North Yorks.
Lovely drive, smooth, comfortable. Momo leather which was unmarked, wooded wheel etc
It would do a few journeys before throwing a wobbly.
one week, it was an alternator, approx 3 weeks later the air com compressor siezed, a couple of weeks after that the balancer belt pulley sheared so the belt came off, though luckily not disturbing the cambelt.
It never actually let me down, but as much as i loved driving it I was fed up with constant up keep, so sold it on
That was my second Alfa, the first being a 145 cloverleaf, with the same engine. That too had similar faults, so I wouldnt go down the Alfa route again..............although ive always fancied a GTV 3.0yum

Mine isn't high miles, just 47,000 from new and the car is now 8 years old. However , ive owned 4 Alfas and no may others who do and have been very happy. A mate bought a new Alfa GT JTD 4 years ago and is very close to completing 100,000 trouble free miles.

The key to it is routine servicing completed on time and no skimping.

I had a nice '04 156 2.0 JTS until I got bored of throwing money at it. A very nice place to sit, and a good engine, but even at 6 years old absolutely everything that could have failed on that car did, and that was with full Alfa service history. Electrics were particularly hilarious. Coilpacks, ABS sensors, lambda probes, alternator, you name it, it broke. Despite spending thousands the car didn't go for more than a week without yet another Check Engine light. The bulb failure caption was permanently lit, despite every bulb on the car actually working. I left work one day with a rare dashboard devoid of captions yet by the time I reached the gate a mile later I had ABS fail, TCS fail and stability fail lights, albeit probably related.

Probably unlucky, but the car was far, far from being a dog when I bought it. Other German and Japanese cars I've owned have been paragons of reliability in comparison.

In a 306d??

Curious, but how many hours a day do you drive, or is driving/delivery your job? When I used to do 24,000 commuting miles a year (plus social miles on top). I used to spend average of 3-4.5 hours a day driving.

Japanese cars are reliable, however German cars aren't it's a misnomer.

And before the German fan boys try to challenge me. Don't bother.

1999 to 2010 I worked for the RAC, Mondial Assistance & the AA.

In a Passat 2.0TFSI.

I'm a regional account manager (ie. sales rep's boss) - hours / day in the car vary, but some days I can rack up 400 miles, although most days are circa 200 miles - so 4-6 hours in the car.

Yes with 'routine servicing'. What every fanboy glosses over is what routine servicing entails.

My built-in-the-80s Lancia Delta Turbo was one of the most reliable cars I've owned. Even the electrics worked (mostly)! The lucky previous owner's £7k worth of bills probably had a lot to do with it.

SGT had a SW with 160k+ on the clock. So must have been good for it for a MD to retail it smile

JTDs are known to run past 200k without any real issues, some suspension wear and tear, and the earlier models are bit rust prone, but a post 2000 JTD which has been looked after should prove a very reliable daily drive

I have been running our 2.4jtd sw for three years now. Never let me or my wife down. We have done almost 30k in it and it is at 95k miles.

Biggest expense so far has been the wishbones needing replacement at the last MOT. Came to about £700, but did include some other small issues and a full service.

So not too bad, plus it is a lovely comfortable car which i would feel confident doing another 30k in without too much trouble....

I can't comment on the Alfa, but I also rack up the miles. IME cars like to be used daily and mway miles are easy miles. The benefit of covering solid milage every day, is that you know the car well and start to read the signals about what needs some attention in the future.

My last few cars have been in the 100k+ club and the only time any of them got huffy was when left for a period of time.

My daily beaters tend to be germanic, but I can't see running an Alfa being that difficult so long as you stay on top of the little issues before they become big issues.

Hmm, thing is, I'd probably be buying a post 2000 5 cyl oil burner, prob with more than 100k on it. The pug is at about 145 at the mo, sounds a little rattly but gets any amount of money thrown at it every 12k simply because the amount of miles I do,I need reliable transport. I figure the alfa will obviously be more expensive to run as it's not a bean tin with wheels.

30k is commuting before business or pleasure mileage, so I think I'd have to accept a 156 in my price range would be ready for the scrap yard after 3 years at the very most under my ownership.

It's that or a 406 but that idea doesn't really blow my skirt up.
