360 wireless controller fault

Possibly not the correct forum but someone may know the answer to this from experience.

I have a new wireless 360 controller which won't stay on.

Pressing the x button (think it's called the live button) results in the green leds flashing.

Then it goes to top left only and starts the xbox up as it should.

Then the green led goes off and the controller turns off.

If you press a button while the top left green led is on the xbox responds appropriately.

It's not a battery or linking problem - I have tried it with AA battery packs from my other working controllers.

I noticed it says NiMh on the bit of the mainboard that I can see with the battery compartment removed.

So here's the question - are there some new wireless controllers that will only work with a rechargeable battery pack?

I know that some manufacturers place chips inside lipol battery packs that prevent you using oem lipol packs with the same specs for laptops. But I didn't think you could do this with nimh batteries.

Tried resyncing it? (Pressing the little buttons on the console and on the front of the pad)

Yep.

Still think it's a nimh battery issue.

Anyone else noticed the letters nimh on the board of their controllers?

Is it both a brand new pad and battery or a mix of the two?

I know this is a stupid question, but if it is a new battery pack, is it charged?

I'm using AA alkaline batteries not rechargeable as the controller didn't come with a rechargeable pack.

It's only when I noticed the letters nimh on the motherboard that I started to think about that as a possible reason for it not working.
