Options for transporting cars to the docks

Just curious to see if fellow PH'ers can give me the good oil on this...
Essentially, I may have to move 3 or 4 cars from various parts of the UK to the docks in the next 1-2 months.
Back home in Aus, I can purchase what is called an 'unregistered vehicle temporary driving permit' - which one effectively prints out as an A4 piece of paper, folds in half and sticks inside the windscreen. Cost is £50, and allows vehicle to be moved from 7AM to 7PM for 30 days, purely to get a vehicle registered, engineered or exported.
Given that I have been quoted up to £2 per mile to move some of these cars (towing / cartage), I am wondering if there is an easier option for moving them hundreds of miles.
Any thoughts or links would be greatly appreciated.

if they have no MOT- short answer is no.
To be road moved you need MOT, Tax and Insurance. Without all those you stand the risk of car being seized and crushed - Road traffic act.
If your not based in the UK you wont get insurance.
I would also advise against moving the cars without making sure they are safe first, for example I purchased a lotus which smelt of petrol (I had a fair idea so paid appropriate price). It needed a full petrol tank refurb ($3k).
I could not have shipped it as would have been dangerous goods.
Also unless your a dealer be very careful shipping four cars within short period of time (ie a year or so). Tax man will come down very hard back here in Oz - I ship two a year to avoid tax penalties.

Couple of ideas come to mind.
Firstly can you hire a trailer and tow them one at a time to the docks; secondly use a car transport firm to do it for you. I used a firm in Preston to take my car to and from the South of France and the price was cheaper than I could have driven it, though they weren't overly reliable timewise but that ws due to a lot of booking cancellations during the volcano eruptions.
Thirdly do you know a local car dealer who might, for a price, lend you his trade plates? Not sure of the legality of that but may be worth looking into??
