Wife is 32, has quite a bit of driving experience but only has a provisional licence.

Would like to purchase a car that she can learn in and I can still use for the daily commute.

So car needs to be inexpensive to insure (for her), a 6 speed diesel and have built-in sat nav.

Budget £5k.

What do you reckon? How feasible is something like a 7-8 year old BMW 3 series or a 5-6 year old Focus?

Insurance may be relatively reasonable whilst she is on a provisional license but be sure to be aware of insurance quote for when she has passed as it will more than likely shoot up at this point.

Worth bearing in mind.

Focus, more than likely she'll scrape it or ding it a bit, and they are a food drive as well, my wife hates driving my BMW after her focus, she says its like driving a tank
