As per the title, can anybody tell me the procedure to pair my phone to the system in the car. I have just bought an XJR with all the books apart from the one for the stereo.

I'm sure that X308 XJR didn't have bluetooth - the phone controls are for the factory fitted phone cradle in the centre console (for a Motorola StarTac) - if your car has this kit, then conversion cable are available to link the car kit to a Nokia CARK-8 bluetooth hf kit, retaining the use of the stereo & wheel controls, but if you don't have the phone cradle in the console, you're probably better off getting a normal hf kit installed at a local specialist.

Thanks for the answers. The car does have a phone in the centre armrest,so I'll look at getting the kit suggested.

I'd been using one of those dummy tape things with a 2.5mm jack. It kind'a works but I get a lot of transciever crosstalk, (y'know, d-d-d-daaa-d-d-d-d-zzzz-zzzzz-zzz, kind'a thing), when the phone's struggling for a signal so I've bought a Jabra bluetooth remote control unit that you can plug headphones or the dummy tape into...

It's backlit and allows control of the phone for hands free using the tapedeck and media player too. It even sends the Sat Nav narration through it.

I'll install it with a bit of sticky tape over the weekend and let you know how it goes.

The only downside is that it goes offline when it's being charged so can't plug it into a USB charger while on the move.

I put a PAYG SIM into the car phone and just forward my mobile to the car, when needed.

Cecil, that sounds like the perfect solution. It has got an old tesco card slotted in the phone handset, so I guess that is what the previous owner used to do.

I have the phone manual, if you need reference, but, it is a PITA to set up a phone book, I just use last number redial in the car, or pick up calls.
