I have a 1989 350i with a five speed LT77 Gearbox - reverse us up next to first gear.
Unfortunately there is, and has never been during my ownership, any gate between 1st and reverse. Consequently it's very easy to select the wrong gear when making a standing start.
Can this be fixed without taking the box out?
Can the box be removed without the engine?
If not, I think I will wire up a warning light on the dashboard somehow.
Thanks to everyone who helped with my rough running/Idle problem. I've not made any progress and am awaiting an electrical tester and another new temp sensor.
I'm starting to point fingers at my ECU as it has absolutely no markings on it - nothing - niente - bubkiss. As I said in a previous post - this engine has never run well. Maybe the previous owner fitted the wrong ECU

There isn't really a gate as such, just some slots inside the box where the selector lever lines up.
My advice in this situation is (while in neutral) slip it into 2nd first, then go straight forward into first with no sideways jiggling, then you are ready to drop the clutch. A quick semi-dip of the clutch will see it pull forward an inch to confirm.

just had the same problem and found it a little tricky not to select reverse rather than first!
you can either do this from under the car or lift the back of the centre console and remove the handbrake/gear stick gaiter. from looking down on top of the gearbox (inside car) on the right hand side you'll see a plate, 2 bolts with springs and 2 other bolts below them (all bolts 10mm spanner), the 2 lower bolts hold the plate in place and can be left alone, the other 2 with springs can be tightened to make it harder to knock gear lever over to engage reverse. gradually tighten the bolts until you have the desired amount of forced required to knock lever over (too much and you'll not get the gear lever over to select reverse, too little and its back to first/reverse roulette!)
be warned though while messing about i managed to bugger the reverse light switch now the switch sticks in and the lights stay on!!
probably best to wind the switch out first until your happy with gear lever!!

What a relief to know that I don't have to remove Engine & Box to improve this situation.
Getting this car back in shape after being stood since 2009 will, I am sure, require many more visits to the forum. What a fantastic source of knowledge & experience... better than a book.
