Defender Auto Conversion

ashcroft use the ZF4HP22EH unit for their conversions but at 5335+VAT on the 2.4 TDCi or 4500 + VAT for the TD5 its bloody expensive
I've got a 3.9 V8 110 with the older ZF4HP22 unit and I'd much prefer a manual - only real good thing about the auto is the viscous locking centre diff.

What don't you like about the 3.9 V8 / Auto conversion? When I was having problems with my LT77 I seriously thought about putting a 4 speed ZF auto in the Bowler instead. A friend talked me out of it citing poor fuel economy...how much worse could a ZF auto be than a 5-speed manual in a light truck like a Bowler?
I've never measured the mpg TBH lol
I just like manual cars better than autos, the ZF is much much better around town as you don't have a heavy clutch but if somthing goes wrong its very expensive to fix and the fact its only a 4 speed box makes it pretty long geared. would love to convert it to an R380 but far too much money.
