But what MPG do you get?
Ive had a Mondeo Tdci 130ps for 30 months, done 80K in it (now on 150K) its had w/pump, DMF/clutch/starter, 2 susp coils/drop links/wishbones, and is more spacious than an Octavia/Vectra or Focus, it gets a true 50mpg which i need cos it works for its keep but its time could be coming to an end.....so what do i buy for £6000 on a maximum 4 year plate?

Sounds like trigger's broom. I imagine the cost of all those repairs bring your consumption down by 10MPG equivalent. . . . . . . http://www.fuelly.com/

plenty of people have already done this, and put it up into a nice database for you.

The daily driver shed '99 passat 1.9tdi 110bhp. Worth nothing, costs a few hundred quid a year in maintenance. 53mpg average over the last 30k miles. I can leave it anywhere. Proper shed motoring.
The weekend toy 1975 spitfire 1500. Never less than 38mpg although I thrash it mercilessly. On a sedate run it would give 45 or so if I kept the speed down.

35, except for last thursday where I was getting paid 38ppm, I drove behind a lorry and nearly got 50mpg
I always do that for ppm trips, I call it maximising my margin
I've got 800 business miles coming up next week (Rubs hands together)
Oh, and I usually get around 32mpg. Short urban journeys are a killer.
I can get 45mpg + on a 50+ mile journey if I feel like it though which is nice for a hot hatch.

A disappointing 43mpg from my old A4 (120PS) Tdi Avant over 90,000 miles. The replacement is a 183PS 320d Touring and has so far managed 47mpg over the first 10,000 miles for the same driving (had 53mpg that week when everyone was queing for fuel and I took it very gently to eek it out). My Z3 gets about 26mpg so almost half my daily, but twice the fun. My RS2000 has used about 2 gallons over the last 13 years though, but that's another story...
2001 2.0 Avensis petrol, £1900.
Since April last year, it's done 15k and averaged 44mpg on my daily commute (28miles each way, mostly DC).
New discs and pads (£115)
2X O2 sensors (£47 each)
Front tyres (£75 each)
Think that's it, aside from oil, coolant, filters etc.
Very very easy car for the home mechanic, and bloody well built (in Derbyshire)
