Sprained ankle in my sleep!!

Well this is a bit strange, I woke up yesterday morning with a bit of pain in my ankle, I thought it was a bit odd but powered through as you do and put some ice on it last night.

Then I woke up this morning and it's worse and pretty swollen!

How has this happened?

I had a hernia operation 3 weeks ago so haven't been able to do any proper exercise since and now this comes along just as I was thinking I'll be able to start jogging again. I was planning to start training for a duathlon in September this week but now I can barely walk.

Has anyone else had this happen to them and if so how long am I looking at being out of action for?
