Getting to Pompey on Friday

from London and trying to work out if I'd be mad to try and do the A316/M3/M27 leaving at about 6pm.

Should I just suck it up and get the train from Waterloo?

Any ideas on travel time in the car from anyone who knows this route?

Can you cut through or round Richmond Park? Then it's A3 (inc Hindhead Tunnel) all the way

Starting from Paddington so was thinking Hammersmoth, Chiswick, Kew, Richmond, 316, M3....

Assumed A3 would be a pig...

I'd be more tempted by the A3 route. It's often not that bad, + it has the Hindhead tunnel, and everyone likes a tunnel.

Holiday season so it will be quite busy but if you're starting at 6 it shouldn't be too bad straight up the A3.

No really - it was fine. In the tintop so Hindhead was a little dull but enjoyed the chap in the 996 GT3 in front giving it the old 30-60 treatment.

Hindhead and the A3 should be pretty clear coming this way from 6 onwards! As you go over the hill past QE Country Park, on the decent, watch out, they often stick a Scamera Van in the layby!
