So Scraggy has to have his special urinary diet food. Or he get's crystals. In the past this has meant a bit of bloody pee and lot's of penis licking. But he was always passing fluid.

Numbnuts here let the special food run out. Didn't get any for a couple of days and fed him on his old stuff until I sorted it out.

Gave him special this morning having got some the night before. But the damage was done. He's at the vet now being flushed...

Stupid stupid stupid thing to do not giving him the right food. It will not be "OK" for a few days.

Still. At this moment he's in the right place. Should be ok, but sounds pretty invasive...

frown Please stop beating yourself up, you have been very very unlucky, most cats will get away with it for more than a few days, I would be worried that maybe the urinary food has just about been keeping it under control rather than keeping him properly clear. Or he was building up to another problem and the change of diet just tipped it more quickly. Has there been any recent stress/ changes for him recently?

Is it dry or wet urinary food you give him?

I hope he responds qwuickly, the good thing is you spotted it quickly, not like the cat that we had at the weekend that had probably been blocked for 2-3 days.

Just had the vet on the phone. They have drained some urine off as a preliminary step before the full job. But he got very distressed and has had trouble breathing. So he's been on a bit of oxygen and they have a drip in him to keep running fluid though his kidneys. They did some blood work and seem really happy with them. Some increased readings but not anywhere as bad as could be.

They are going to monitor and drain overnight as required, so he's more comfy, and settled before doing a full flush of the bladder tomorrow.

Nothing changed recently. If anything things are more relaxed. I found Scraggy with his head rested on Alan, both asleep on Tuesday!

Fingers crossed! (Hope the insurance covers this one...they wormed out of the dental...gerr)

I'm a little surprised if they are relatively happy with his bloods that they are not unblocking him tonight but maybe it's because he got stressed (though why did he? was it bacause they were trying to drain his bladder without sedation?) either way proceeding with caution is sensible, however they will need to be very careful esp as they've put him on fluids but not unblocked his bladder yet. I assume they'll have someone assessing and draining as needed through the night.

Hope he has a comfortable and uncomplicated night so he can get properly sorted tomorrow.

They are a 24 hour place. A vet and couple of nurses do the nightshift monitoring them.

The delay was because of the breathing problem they said.

I trust them. He is a bit wheezy, so we may have found asthma or hayfever or something as well. The joys of a stray.

It's often a balancing act frown. Still he'll be well monitored tonight, that's what counts.

Sounds like he has cystitis due to crytals with some difficulty passing urine, rather than a full blockage, otherwise iv fluid diuresis would not be the best idea. If the bladder is blocked, it is an emergency, if the crystals are irritating then it is less serious. However, if under control, then hopefully surgery not needed.

Wife checked in on the phone. Sounds like he's passed a trickle somehow. But he's still on oxygen and a small diazepam dose to keep him calm. They expect him to return tomorrow at somepoint. Yay. smile

If that sounds confusing it's 3rd hand. But positive is the feeling.

scratchchin It sounds like we're a bit more concerned about the breathing issue than the bladder now. He's passed fluids overnight. So while they do want to flush him out, they are planning a heart scan as well/first while he's sedated.

Fingers crossed Pet Plan decide to cover this lot.

Fingers & Paws crossed for him

Pepi says Meow, as he feels Scraggy's pain getting bladder issues himself. He has Cystaid daily as well as the special food.

Well the Vet has been back on the phone to me.

Flushing commenced and scans happened. We may have asthma as well as bladder problems. They kept him on oxygen during all the playing about, and want to see him pee a few more times. So no Scraggy tonight.

But tomorrow fingers crossed he'll be ok to come home. The scans are awaiting an expert on cat chests to give their opinion. And urine samples are going for processing.

Any possible connection between catnip and asthma? Wonder if that banana was a good idea?...

Apart from getting him too worked up and excited I wouldn't have thought catnip would directly cause it.

We've sold lots of these and not had a problem. Keeping fingers crossed for him.

Yay. He's coming home this afternoon. He was passing a bit of blood in his pee to start with but apparently now it's a proper cat pee colour. And he's tried licking the vets and nurses to death. No breathing problems anymore. So free to come home. Where no doubt he'll take one look and fall asleep on the sofa.

Interestingly Alan has found his voice the last few days. And has started to chirp when entering the room. We'll see if that continues with the return of the scragster.

Well he's home. Seems a bit down still though. Rattle a food pouch and he comes running. Get him by the food though and he sniffs it and walks away....

...great no sooner have I typed that. And the OH takes him to the food and he tucks in.

Still he's been a bit quiet.... Bet that changes at 1/2 past oh my god o'clock and he jumps on the bed.

He's pretty much back to his usual self. Still choosing the litter tray sometimes over going outside which he'd started to do previous to this. That in itself is good though because then we know he is passing fluid.

A bit grumpy about his strict diet. He'll eat a little bit, leave it, and go back when it's clear nothing else will be delivered.

But basically he's sleeping and fending off the occasional Alan attack, rather than indulging in self fellatio.

That's just cats. I have a dog who thinks he is a cat and does the same.

BUT at least he is a lot better now.
