Looking at picking up a new car soon, it will be used daily to get to work etc, so i want it to be somewhat reliable - However i am mechanically competant so minor issues are no problem.

Budget of around about £1000.

To give you a sort of idea in my taste in cars, so far i've owned the following:
-Mk4 Escort
-Mk5 Escort
-Mk6 Escort
-Ford Cougar
-Volvo 340
-E36 BMW 318is
-Honda Civic EG

Out of the lot my favorite was definaely my Ford Cougar and im definately considering another one.

Dont want any more escorts apart from maybe an Xr3i but they're quite pricey currently.

I do really like old cars, I loved my EG Civic also but the whole honda dub scene is a load of ste that annoys me now so i dont want another Honda really.

This is what i've considered so far:
-Another Ford Cougar - Want a 2L Zetec one, My dad has a V6 one and i honestly preffered my 2L, It drove nicer.

-106 Rallye - Always loved them, however getting a tidy one for a grand isnt happening frown

-Ford Capri - Want 1.6 or 2L Pinto, But again one for a grand is looking unlikely.

-Fiesta Zetec S - Oddly cheap to insure, small go-karts from what i've heard and apparently good fun.

-Mk2 Golf - Always had a hankering for a GTI but again, for a grand it'd be tatty.

-205 GTI - Always liked them

-XR2i - Again, like the Zetec S but an older go-kart biggrin

-Mk1 Mx5 - Can i get a tidy one for a grand? and whats all the hype? Are they really that good?

-200Sx S13 - They're awesome in my opinion, but the CA engines are not exactly reliable and again for a grand it'll be an abused/drifted one no doubt.

Insurance is kind of an issue, i'm 20 with 1 years NCB

Any input/help welcome!

Thanks.

Hear me out on this one (and I promise I'm not on a commision with these) but what about a 2.5 V6 MG ZT on a modern classic policy? (Okay maybe I'm a little biased) but it is possible to pick up a 52 plater on that budget (I got mine for only £600).

Failing that of all the ones you've listed, I'd have the Cougar (almost bought one instead of the ZT-T)

Yep landedvery mch on my feet, yes it's silver, yes it's 135000 miles on the clock and yes it only had 2 months MOT on it when I got it. But had been properly looked after, two previous owners and all it needed to pass it's recent MOT was a new drivers seatbelt (the old one was fraying) £14.99 from a scrappies, and two new tyres (althoguh did decide to treat myself and got new rubber put on each corner), the best bit, I know if I wanted to I could probably put it up on auto trader or ebay today and get about a grand for it.

Saab 9-3? Very cheap now. there was a blue one near me that had about 80k on the clock and looked great for £800.

I know you ruled out Honda, but what about a Prelude 2.2 vtec? Ignored by the whole scene mostly, and they are a great drive with a brilliant engine.

Fair play to you, I will admit the look of the MG Z cars is very subjective, not as marmite as a PT cruiser, but still a love or loathe look IMO smile

As for the Cougar, black all the way wink

Checked both the Saab and the Prelude and insurance is too high to even consider them!

And as for a Puma, its a smaller Coguar, id rather have a Cougar thats why i didnt consider a Puma smile

Not quite! the Puma is smaller but it is a very sharp drive whereas the Cougar is a soggy Mondeo

How about a mk3 Prelude 2.0i, handsome thing with pop up haeadlights, 4 wheel steering and 150bhp in a lightish car, £1k gets you a cracker if you can find one.

£1k gets you a lot of Alfa these days too, maybe a ts GTV?

Cant remember if you listed it but a mk1 MR2 has to be good news too.

I dont think you could call a Puma a small Cougar although I havnt driven either so cant really comment.

The puma is a way better drive than the cougar.
