Hurst on the Floor

Well that seems simple enough
Following on from that then.... Was it unusual to see the the gear stick 'on the floor'? Or do we give into 'artistic license' at this point?
I've read that you couldn't get 'fuelie head' on a 396 Chevy so I'm guessing the car references would not pass the 'Marisa Tomei' Test.
Cheers for the very quick ans.

It really comes from "4 on the floor" meaning 4 speed manual, rather than the staple US fodder of column shift auto.

I suppose most American cars had a column mounted automatic shifter. Sports cars would have had a normal manual "on the floor". Like in the the Beach Boys song Little Deuce Coupe: "competition clutch and four on the floor".
