E36 320i Coupe - pinking no more!

I’d heard of pinking but dint actually know what it was, even though my BM was pinking and has been for sometime. The mechanic I usually go to insisted the rattling came from the exhaust, I said it sounds more like the torque converter...its an auto.
Anyway a mate told me about Octane Booster, he also said it stops pinking. I tried it and I get a BOOST in performance and the pinking has gone. but I was under the impression pinking came from cheap fuels, I’ve had the pinking for about 3-4 months and about 3 months before it started have been driving with high octane fuels and sometimes Unleaded.
