After a certain Mr Hill made some comments about motorways it appears that some people have got rather upset and lots of threads have popped up.

One certain trend within these threads are a group that believe that motorways are fun.

I don't think they are fun

I think they are horrible boring mind numbing annoying irritating over crowded pains in the arse which are almost inescapable.

I would happily never ever drive on a motorway or dual carriageway ever again

Sadly to do so would mean taking a huge hit to my life as it would take 28 days to reach anywhere in the UK.

So if you could never go on a motorway/dual carriageway ever again without it effecting your life would you be sad

I do a lot of business driving.

Freeways which are our motorways are a godsend.

They're lovely when they're quiet, try the M69 at night (now now).
Actually they can be ok even when busy. Would be even better if people learnt some manners.

I'd call them a necessary evil. They are worth it for the motorway slip roads though, the last bastion of high speed cornering and hard acceleration.

This. Motorways allow me to do day trips to as far as the West Midlands and South Germany from here. Having that large a reach without having to organise for anything (transport, hotel stays) and avoiding air travel gives me a great sense of freedom. smile

Ultimately, they are a utility to link A and B as swiftly and easily as possible. As such the only 'fun' could really be the anticipation of arrival.

But, the simple fact is that quite often you just want to get from A to B as swiftly and easily as possible. So, in those instances and speaking relatively then a motorway would be significantly more fun than the world's greatest twisty road.

Oh, and long, empty Autobahn bends can be a life-affirming experience at >200 km/h. smile

If you had a magic button that transported you to your destination without touching a motorway

Would you use it

I live in a relatively low population area of a relatively low population country... my nearest 'motorway' (most of you probably wouldn't even call it that, 2 lanes each way) is an hour and half away.

So no, I wouldn't miss them at all.

No. I like travel. I like seeing my surroundings slowly change rather than being plonked into a different scenery. I like driving and I don't need at the ragged edge of the dynamic envelope to enjoy it, just give me a good steady pace and I'm happy (if I were talented enough to be a racing driver, surely I'd be an endurance racer smile ). I like the odd opportunity to max my car out on the Autobahn (237 km/h in my new company motor, still room for a bit of improvement). I like long, open bends that aren't quite flat out. I like seeing special, old, inspiring or just plain weird motors on the move, and the mutual appreciation when you pull alongside (even better when the driver happens to be a nice young lady of course!). I like pulling into a petrol station in my TVR and getting appreciative remarks. smile

Also I find driving on motorways brings me in the mood for the nice bit of winding country road at the end that brings me to my destination.

All that jazz

This ^, simply for the 'wanting to get there as swiftly and easily as possible' part. No fun being stuck behind some SARP on a back road doing 40 when you can do 85-90 relatively unimpeded on a motorway. So yes, I would miss motorways, a lot.

motorways, I hate them.

moved to Germany a little over a year ago now.

Autobahns are BRILLIANT. they are so much fun and, to some extent, an enjoyable challenge. You have to concentrate, anticipate, judge closing speeds a lot better, look further up the road. and you get everywhere quicker. A very enjoyable driving experience (this could just be the novelty though).

totally, especially when you spin it and don't hit anything.

When going through a city, I would rather be going mindlessly along at 100Km behind a line of cars, than stopping at every second corner for a red light.

Today I drove 25Km each way on a good country main road. All the way I was following something or other doing 75Km or so. Trucks day dreamers, retirees, they all trundled along. I passed a few, but need not have bothered. There was an oncoming vehicle Evert 150 yards or so, preventing passing most of the time.

I would have loved to be on a motorway instead.

Yes. I dont consider them fun, but it's amazing how quickly the miles munch down on a long trip, even doing the legal speed limit.

If we didn't have motorways, the B roads would be full up instead.

I do think that such a thing would increase the driving ability of most of the morons out there though.

I love driving, and I love driving on challenging roads but; if this were part of my commuter route I'd get bored pretty quickly and end up either selling my car or losing my licence. I'm not saying I prefer motorways either, they're boring all the time but it's nice to have a choice. smile

I don't "enjoy" driving on them but realistically as the fastest roads they are necessary.

I avoid them whenever reasonably possible but I think it would be annoying if they all vanished.

Given the volume of traffic that travels along the M1 everyday, towns and villages would be permanently clogged if it didn't exist. As I live not far from it I'd definitely miss it if it wasn't there. Same goes for every other motorway, they're the best way to shift large numbers of vehicles from A to B.
