Back in January i bought a toyota iq to get me too and from work, my office is 1.5 miles away (yes i could / should walk / cycle) so i could leave my wife and son the bm a home. The toyota gives out 99 grams of co2 apparently and it's free of road tax. So the garage i bought it from told me i "wouldnt need a tax disc" and being new to the whole free tax thing i bought this....

On Tuesday a very kind traffic warden gave me a ticket in m own office (grrrrr) which is another story, but while he was there he decided to slap a "we've reported you to the dvla for not having a tax disk" sticker on the car too. Thanks! So i go on the direct gov website and cannot find any mention of whether or not the car should have a tax disk or not, there only seems to be a mention to vehicles like disabled cars.

So i take a trip to my local post office with my log book. They have no idea and send me on the the bigger post office. The 'bigger post office' haven't got a clue either and he tells me that its a petrol car and therefore i must pay tax. I said thats fine can you tell me how much it'll be then, he goes and gets his charts... And low and behold it's free!

So he gets on the phone to the dvla and they say that apparently i need a tax disc but a free one?! While he was on the phone i go on my phone on the 'order your tax disc online' website. After following the process through it says the car has a tax disc till 09/12 (the garage never gave this to me) but i can order another one. I did so.

My question is, if it's illegal not to display a tax disk am i going to get in the st for this? Does a parking warden have enough clout that the dvla believe him or will they just send me a warning?

How should i play this?

P.s never trust the garage :-(

Did you really think you could drive around in a car and not display a tax disc? Even tax exempt classic cars have to display a disc.

Thus the same for historic tax free cars.

Iirc not displaying tax and not having tax ate two seperate offences. The former is a £30 fine I believe and the latter = clamps & towed

Give the fine/paperwork to the garage you purchased the car from. Their mistake in not giving you the tax disc, so only fair that they should pay.

How did you not know this before? It's a bit like knowing it gets light when the sun comes up. And why not speak to the garage and have a moan at them.

If I'm right (I might not be), the Police give you a ticket for failing to display, whereas reporting to DVLA means they are coming after you for having no tax. I suspect the fact that you have tax will mean they won't bother.

Stupidity tax, also free unfortunately.

BTW it's definitely someone else's fault.
