Looked like a speaker stand for the commentary up the hill, might not be too substantial if he did hit it.

It is a speaker gantry. Not the most robust struicture in the world, but I still wouldn't want to hit it.

ETC - i got the use of the gantry wrong first time.

The amount of cars that have been propelled over there is very very lengthy!

John Bradburn's crash there a few years ago was pretty bad too.

Or possibly the luck of Caterham drivers - it looks like it didn't really put the cage to the test - all the big impacts were on the nose or the tail.

Yep and the car stayed together around the driver. I've seen lesser solo accidents in tin-tops that have ended up with the driver virtually being thrown out of the disintegrating shell of the remains of the car.

That's not what I would call an "Abrupt Halt!" yikes Could get good marks if it was a diving or gymnastics competition. Glad he was all ok.
