Dangerous Driving
Discussion
Yesterday, I was treated to an excellent show of stupidity ( mainly by drivers of a famous German marque ) on the A83 Glasgow - Campbeltown road.
1st incident - A guy driving an M3 was tailgaiting me for around 5 miles before he decides to overtake on a _very_ short straight just before a sharp right hand bend. He passes me and a car comes round the corner, he pushes his way into the gap in front leaving no space at all. He missed the on coming traffic by a very small margin. Had he been 1 sec later we would all have been involved in a crash.
Next incident, someone in a toff roader also made by our German friends overtakes 6 cars in a row, above the speed limit with a bend coming up. Not indicating and pushing his way into the queue of traffic.
This makes my blood boil. I have pictures of both the cars and their stupidity.
To the BiB, can I report these people for dangerous driving?
Deester.

The overtaker shouldn't have to "push his way into the gap leaving no space at all" the person being overtaken should leave sufficient space for the overtaker to pull in. Anyone who does not leave sufficient gap is driving dangerously. Likewise "and pushing his way into the queue of traffic", he shouldn't have to. The people in the queue denying him space are the real idiots and could easily cause a serious accident. I am fed up with people who don't like being overtaken and think it is OK to play with my life by closing gaps and accelerating whilst being overtaken. They should have their licenses removed.
Here is what the highway code says:
Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.
I did an overtake last night. About 15 cars to pass. No drama, completed in two hits. Only once I had completed the overtake did the rest of the drivers remember how it was done.
Like yours, the overtake was a bit tricky as everyone was in slot racer mode and bunched up. I did have to squeeze into one gap , but it was a gentle easing rather than a full "move or I'll be there anyway" job.
Why the
the first driver didn't start the process when he had the opportunity I have no idea. I think it's the shock that someone had the audacity to pass that wakes them up.

I agree with Bruciebaby. It makes my blood boil when drivers speed up whilst I'm overtaking.

Yep I am sick and tired of been flashed at having overtaken some one doing 45 in a 60. As for w*nkers speeding up, if anyone does this to me ever I wouldn't hesitate to hit them. No one is leaving me to have a head on. At the end of the day I fancy my chances more with a side swipe than a head on.
Its the old enemy of bad driving, can't overtake, won't overtake. But in their opinion if they can't neither can anyone else and if you try your "desevre" to left out there.
The ozzies have the right idea miles of 3 lanes roads. 5 miles of overtaking lane for one side and then 5 miles for the other.

I went out for a ride in the Caterham this morning. I came up behind a Escort Cabriolet with the roof off and 4 people enjoying the sun. In front of that was nissan Micra
doing about 40 in the 60 NSL.
On a reasonably long straight the Escort pulls out to overtake and I follow through seeing theres plenty of time to do so. As I'm along side the Micra I notice it's pretty close to me and having passed it I look in the mirror to see him about 12 inches over the white line. He'd pulled right towards my overtake to show his/her disapproval in some way!!!
Both the overtakes were well within the speed limit!!
If I wasn't in such a chilled mood I would have stopped him/her to have a word.

The problem with most of these plonkers is
1/. They are generally in cars which show they have no interest in motoring - eg Micras etc. At least it makes it easier to spot the muppets!
2/. Whatever the conditions, limits, circumstances are, they are driving at what they consider to be a safe speed. If anyone wishes to travel faster than them, then they must me suicidal or mad, and get treated accordingly by use of lights, horns etc.
They just travel along, with barely a cars distance from one another, completely unaware of the world around them. Sad really.

To answer your question Deester - yes you can.
However, bearing in mind it would be your tale against the offending driver who was not involved in an accident. Your photo may assist as would the testimony of anybody else in your vehicle. More killing would be other testimony of someone else in the line that was overtaken/oncoming and forced to take some evaisive action. A file with all this in placed before CPS would stand a better prospect of being pursued than a one against one.

I had this just the once on my grand tour of Scotland in the Cerb. Overtaking a row of traffic when a Volvo comes round the corner towards me. Shed 50+ mph and edge over into a gap that doesn't exist in front of a Mondeo, he can either brake or hit me and decides on the former, I slot in still braking and the numpty in the Ka ahead of me gets excited and does a crash stop! So I juggle the gaps using my brakes between the Ka in front and the Mondeo behind and we all avoid contact. Next straight, goodbye. 420 BHP works just nicely.
Now the cars in the row might of thought what I did was dangerous but the fact is that the Mondeo driver, by not leaving a proper gap and the Ka driver who panicked and hit his brakes when there was no need were the true dangerous drivers. Also that we made no contact despite 2 people driving so badly proves what a big margin there really was.
Contrast that with my blat in the 7 yesterday. Cruising out of Stratford a Merc 500SL comes up behind and makes overtaking body language so I lift off and pull over towards the kerb to make it easy for him and whoosh, he is gone. Later on the B roads I come upon a Honda S2000 obviously in less of a hurry and he extends the same favour to me. This is as it should be, speed from A to B is not related to penis size. If someone comes behind me who is travelling faster than me I make it as easy as possible for them to overtake. This makes the roads a lot safer for everyone. I really think that anyone who does anything to make it difficult for people to overtake them is a total menace. It is attempted murder.

I entirely agree with all your criticisms of drivers who drive nose to tail on the open road, thus making safe overtaking difficult or impossible for others.
People who drive in that manner should be charged with careless driving or driving without due care etc., or whatever formal charge is available.
Those who deliberately try to prevent an overtake that has already started, are in my opinion deliberately driving dangerously, and they should be dealt with extremely severely. In fact I would ban such people from driving for a while, and then re-test them.
For my own part I do not worry too much about people making the occasional innocent mistake, but the deliberate bloodymindedness is quite intolerable.
Unfortunately, as we often note, there is hardly ever a Traffic Officer around to see that sort of behaviour and take action.
Best wishes all,
Dave.

You and I seem to read the same rule book.
I like this principle of "I'll help you and you help me" in relation to other road users. Makes it safer, more enjoyable and generally much more pleasant.
It works for me.

Yep I agree if you have not left enough space for someone to pull into in front of you "YOU SHOULDNT BE THAT CLOSE" sorry but I would like to see the pictures of how close you all were following.
I had someone this morning who closed the gap on me, I pulled back but caught him out the 2nd time when I made a dummy overtake as the car in front turned left. Ha ha.

Absolutely spot on. If someone has 'caught you up', then let 'em past. They are out of your life and history. No point at all in holding people up. Apart from anything else, it's rude.
I have to say, in some of the more remote places, people do actually pull left and indicate. Being a git seems to be more of a townie attitude.

This is the way the Italians drive on the open road too. There's a great feeling of liberty about driving over there.

The French too.
If I see a bike making good progress behind me, I tuck in and back off a touch to give them room to go by safely. Lets face it in traffic they're gone.
I regularly get flashed lights and shaken fists from people who will never overtake, but sit close enough to the car in front to make you believe they might. If you're tootling then leave a 2 second gap. If someone fills it then back off.
The amount of people I overtake and pull in on who panic brake when they see my brake lights as I pull in. I'm overtaking you. I'm going faster than you. To match the speed of the traffic I have to adjust my speed (brake) to merge back in. Not effing rocket science. If you used your peripheral vision and your mirrors, you'd have seen me coming. Why are you flashing your lights and horning me you knob?

If someone was tail gating me for 5 miles I'd be fairly sure that they were going to do something stupid and I would have put my left indicator on and slowed right down when (as soon as possible) I thought it was safe for them to overtake.
