Hi,

Considering an S - Type, all 70-80K all 2004-2005.

Any common faults to look out for?

Cambelt to change soon? Cost?

Any common failures at this milage?

Is it possible and worthwhile to contact Jaguar for a warranty?

Advice appreciated,

Thanks

I have no experience of anything other than the models with the V8 engines.

If a 4.0L V8, the timing chain (note chains not belts in these engines)tensioners need changing promptly so as to have the latest third generation. If it's a full job of tensioners, chains etc (and water pump while at it) then maybe allow for £1300-£1500. If a 4.2L V8 it will have the latest generation tensioners anyway. If not done expect failure and a wrecked engine.

Gearboxes have had their problems, so the newer the better. Get the oils changed in the box and diff, not easy and pretty expensive to do.

A set of discs and brakes etc for front or rear are about £600 at a JMD.

I'm having an interesting time with the tyres at the moment. My records show I usually get about 22,000-24,000 a set front or rear. However, the fronts have now done coming up to 40,000 and I'm advised there's still over 5,000 left...amazing! These are Pirelli P6000s

You can get a warranty from Jaguar if the car has less than 100,000 and is less than 10 years old. For my S-Type 4.2 V8 SE I extended the warranty to a total of 8 years when it reached the mileage limit. It cost between £1100-£1300 or so each year. I would not recommend any other warranty. Whenever I claimed under it I had no problems whatsoever.

Only the 2.7D has a belt, the petrols are all chain.

Change interval is 105,000 miles.

Thanks.

My local garage confirmed the belt on the 2.7. I doubt i'll have it long enopugh to have to change it.

The other thing they mentioned was heavy suspension wear, ball joints and such like.
