Is that the damper or is it one of the control links? Hard to see from that picture. If it's the damper and that black bit is the remains of the actual oil reservoir, that's quite impressive.

Not so much about what car though, how can an owner not realise anything's amiss and turn up for an MOT with the car like that?

As described to me by a WWII vet- 'Duck tape'= DUKW tape ie the cloth reinforced tape they used to stop their amphibious vehicles sinking en route to frogland.
