A bit of advice needed with the following

I am considering travelling 3 hours at the weekend and buying a car from a home based dealer.

As I have a private plate on my px the dealer has said to sign the V5 for the new car and leave it with him along with the V5 for my px. He will change my address on the px v5 to his address. He will then take both V5s on Monday to the dvla and get the plate transferred.

Log book for new car will come to my address and log book for old car will go to him, still in my name.

Is this usual practice? Should I be worried?

I feel worried to be buying a car and not taking the log book with me.

DVLA now only accept complete V5s for plate transfers. I would expect the "dealer" will give you a bill of sale for your new car so i wouldn't worry too much.

By keeping your name and changing the address on your V5, it keeps it from having another owner registered to it, looks like just a change of address. When sold he will send off change of keeper as normal

So is there anything for me to worry about with this arrangement?

Nope all seems fine. As a dealer myself it's often easier for us to sort all the paperwork

On the bill of sale, write on it the time at which you sold the car to the dealer and both sign to confirm this, once you leave the car if he drives it through a speed camera you can prove it wasn't you driving.
