In a spot of trouble on this one i've had 997.1 GT3 before and like the raw power but as a daily driver with speed humps it just was
not working out so sold it a year ago.
Father got PDK TURBO And it's great
Brother just got 997.1 TURBO Tip and its fast but the gear changes are slow compared to the pdk.
so
Went to porsche dealer yesterday and saw a Cayman R and pdk went for a test drive and it feels like a mini GT3 really was surprised by the car so walked out of there with a good deal on paper.
But this is the thing could get the 997.1 turbo tip for the same money ?
I plan to do some trackdays in the year so this is a factor also where is my money safer after a couple of years ?
Be good to hear your thoughts on this.

CR definitely, but probably 997.1 T manual given the choice.

Honestly it comes down to personal preference. I love the 997t but just couldn't own a tip without there was something really appealing about it to me such as huge spec or colour combo. I've not driven a Cayman R model but when I last drove a Cayman at a Porsche driver training day I loved it, a little under powered but a brilliant handling car which over looked that. So for me I would go with the Cayman but word is that the R is pretty harsh for a daily driver and the S is the better option.

I just don't see the point of tracking a tip. Cayman R all the way imo.

CR without a doubt if you dont need back seats.
Any Cayman S or Sport or R feels like a mini GT3.
From A 996 GT3 Mk2 owner. When the R has settled down in price
I know what will be my next Porsche.
At present I have seen CR prices go up from a couple of months ago.
So not a good time to buy.

You are lucky that you have access to try all three cars easily. When driving your brother's car does the tip bother you? If it does, you have to discount it.

What about a 997 Carrera pdk?

Geetee3, I had a similar dilemma, I needed a car that I can use for work, mainly boring motorway and town work visiting clients. I bought a Vantage V8 with sports shift from new and it was awful, I also had 993 Tiptronic, that I loved. I sold them both as we moved and I needed one car, and bought the Cayman R with PDK. Its a great car, not to harsh, my wifes Cooper S on run flats is harder in terms if ride. I have now used it for every type of driving and its perfect, there may be an argument for more power but to be honest on the road its enough. Someone on here suggested sports chrono plus with paddles for getting a move on and they were spot on. I use it mainly in sport, with sports exhaust on with paddles and its great, the box around town and on motorways is perfect. Down a B road it is amazing, plus it is small and agile. My Vantage I always felt like I was in the middle of the road! Mine was a demonstrator and has loads of spec, and it could be said that is not the point of the car and I agree but I need it everyday so its ideal. I drove a standard 997 back to back and loved them both. In the end I thought the Cayman was more fun.

Cayman R is a great car, very underrated by people.
just hard to find the right car at the right time when only 200 were sold.

Cayman R is also low to the ground being 20mm lower than CS so you may still have some problems with speed bumps if that was the reason to sell the GT3?

I went for a test drive in the PDK CR and much prefer the manual but I guess if I was stuck in jams all day then perhaps PDK makes sense. The PDK is brilliant but I didn't like the way it it autochanges at the limit which makes some driver ineraction redundant IMO.

As for the 2 choices... The Cayman R for me smile

The ground clearance is actually very good on the CR; only really the mud flaps that catch which is why it is so practical.

The CR has good clearance if you take humps slow. You can't take a hump at the speed of a regular saloon. You can swap the brake ducts out for GT3 variants which are shallower in profile and are interchangeable. A US owner on Planet-9 modified his without difficulty so when the time comes, think I'll do the same thing. It's not my favourite sound it has to be said.

thanks guys
I wasn't really happy with the tip box so slow compared to the PDK ,also 99% of the time i am doing town driving even though i
love a manual it would drives me up the wall i think.
Did think about the C2s with Pdk but there's just to many about just cannot justify it with them with the turbos the CR is different
enough and it reminds me of my Gt3 and there's less of the CR's on the road also its nice to be different.

So it's settled i've made the call and by 6pm tomorrow I will be a proud owner of a Cayman R.
I glad to here the Cayman's been good in the day to day work situations as well, the seats will take getting used too getting in and out but once your in they are perfect.

It should make going to work a joy again and even may get me sneaking out for a drive again in the middle of the night just for the sake of it, life is too short lets make the most of it whilst we are here smile

Anybody done the ecu's for these as dms do them and say 367bhp which is a nice chuck more but i haven't heard much about tuning these cars other them autofarms turbo charger/superchargers ?
I wouldn't be doing it for a while yet but once i am used to it maybe then depends really on the reviews of previous owners.
