How much is my E39 M5 worth?
Discussion
Hi Folks,
Since I have moved much closer to my office, I am only doing about 100 miles a week instead of 500-600 so, feel the M5 is wasted on me now. Do I really need a 4 door, 5 seat, 400 BHP Saloon for town driving? I am think of selling all my cars, except my track slaag Prelude and getting another E46 M3 daily car or maybe move up a level and get a 996 Turbo considering I will only be doing about 7k a year now. Then again should I be putting so much money into cars that I won't use that much, when I can put the cash into my business?
Anyway, enough of my drivel, basically I was looking at the classifieds and they seem to range from £7k all the way up to £15k which look similar and definitely do not merit being 50% more expensive.
My car is a 2000 facelift with private M5 plate, 83k miles, 4 owners, Carbon Black, FSH and just had an inp 1, just had a new clutch,
had new brakes just before I bought it last year, about 13k miles ago, just had all the wheels refurbed and any paint imperfections taking care of. It is now in great condition with nothing need done anytime soon. What do you think I can get for it? I'm not in a rush to sell it.
Thanks in advance.

Hi
the actual range of asking prices is a tad under £5000 to one up at £15K. There's just a handful at anything more than £12K though!
It'll really sell on condition and specification, and pretty much all pre-facelift E39 M5's have asking prices of £5000-8000, with the bulk of them around between £5500 and £7K. At these prices facelift cars are also offered.
Selling prices are a different matter! advertise yours for what you think is a suitable amount as compared to what other cars are being offered and see how you go !
Cheers, Dennis!

I've been in the market a while so I'd say 7k is realistic given its a 2000 year without seeing pics or full spec. For some reason the age still has quite an impact on price, if it was 2003 you would nearer 9-10k. Where you fall between will vary according to spec and history. If you have all the bills and it's a clean example then someone will pay what it's worth. There are a lot of tired examples so pick your price and put it up! PS See the sales board on m5board there are buyers out there looking for the right car in the UK...you may not need to advertise if the car is a good one. Good luck!
Hi folks,
I reckon around 7k is pretty much where it will sell for. Maybe advertise for 7500? The mileage and bmw main dealer service history as well as post face lift make the difference. Also whether you have two tone or black leather, wood or steel and sat nav (as clunky as it is, it looks better)
Having any of these on it would make the difference in value
Mileage = obvious wear and tear reasons,
BMW history = providence is very important and it's traceable with BMW
Facelift = cured vanos issues
Two tone leather = makes it a more personal choice
Wood = I like but when I sold mine others baulked at it
Sat nav = better looking dash. Not necessarily better directions !
On the 911 front - holy cow they are big performers but very expensive to run!
Let us know and good luck

It does have a FSH with a folder full of receipts, two tone leather seats, sat nav and 4 newish tyres.I reckon around 7k is pretty much where it will sell for. Maybe advertise for 7500? Regarding the 911, 20k of M5/XKR vs 7k of 911, I would imagine the 911 would be cheaper?

If you decide to sell it on pistonheads do post the link here - it would be great to look at the car.
Always good to be a little curious. With the best will in the world, hopefully it will not tempt me to ditch the e46 m3.....
Cheers

Can I have some details on your M3? It might save me the hassle of trying to sell it. Always good to be a little curious. With the best will in the world, hopefully it will not tempt me to ditch the e46 m3.....

Ha ha! not sure I'm planning on selling it, but for the record -
its a 2003 '52' reg with 98k on the clock.
I bought it as an approved used BMW and have maintained it regardless of cost. Just had an 900 big service done.
Its titanium silver with grey leather, on 19s (nicely curbed, soon to be refurbed) with new M3-spec conti sports on all 4 corners, it has sat nav, heated seats, arm rest, tv, rear blinds and factory tints. It lives in a bath of autoglym products and despite it being used daily, it looks great for an almost 10 year old car.
I am now at a cross roads though for two reasons -
- extending the warranty with BMW was a fortune this year - c.2.5k for 12 months (so i didnt) and
- bit of brake shudder at the weekend while braking while driving 'vigorously' (stock discs prone to warping, just like the M5 ones) so looks like i will have to have a brake upgrade soon.
So, sensitively replace or hugely upgrade the car?
There have been a few owners guides recently, and I imagine there will be more in the future by yet more UK magazines, so who knows...
decisions, decisions decisions.

How do you compare the M3 to the M5? You have done it the opposite way as me and went from a M5 to a M3 where as I have went from a M3 to a M5. My personal opinion is the M5 is the better car all round but, doesn't have the hooligan must thrash everywhere personality of the M3. I reckon, a M5 for big miles and a M3 for a toy.its a 2003 '52' reg with 98k on the clock.

That's my point though. For how good the M5 is(probably my favourite car all round I have owed), I don't think it fits the bill as a weekend toy car.
This is exactly why I sold mine. I didn't want my "toy" to also be my family/practical car. FWIW I think yours should sell for between £7.5k and £8.5k.
Yep - went the other way round - had the m5 for a few years which was very cool.
Then bought an m3 ( you never go back etc) but still pine over the old e39.
I have a constant battle with the angel and devil in my head
I love the m3 goes really well and you have to ring its neck which is fun too, but, the m5 was a bigger beast which was well set up and for my money is quicker and better on balance. The best car on sale at any price - was what they said when new.
I also think its better than the e60 because of the gearbox and it hides its light under a bushell.
So I oscillate better selling the m3 and buying another m5 and then I got for a long b road drive and think - god this is good.
Tricky very tricky

I've never driven an M3 but my e39 M5 has huge all round appeal. Grunt everywhere, subtle but also slightly menacing looks, practical, refined, lovely handling, oversteer on tap etc. I've just removed the rear silencers from the exhaust as well, it's added another dimension to it, the noise is absolutely amazing under load with no drone when cruising. It's got to be one of the best mods for the e39 M5, if you have a standard exhaust on yours, I'd highly recommend getting it done.
