A few years back I got myself in a bit of bother with a couple of credit cards. I subsequently sorted things out and shovelled myself out of that hole and cleared the balances.

Anyway, on Experians Credit Expert system I still have one that shows as Delinquent even though it is also shown as settled. (It was settled at the end of 2008).

Looking at my screenshot can anyone tell me if I just need to wait until 6 years have elapsed or whether I can get it removed? In hindsight I could have taken up Capital One's offer to keep the card after I'd settled and the months following settlement would have then showed green and dropped off.

I didn't trust myself at the time though and cancelled my account with them.

It doesn't look particularly bad but I'd prefer if my credit status was all green if I can do it.

There's a few things you can do, start by joining the consumer credit forum for better advice.

These credit reference people are not government agents, they are private companies, so they aren't actually allowed to process data about you if you dont want them too, so read up on the data protection act and exercise your legal rights. Go on that forum to find out how, but basically you serve them notice to stop them processing data about you so that defaults like that won't appear on any search a company makes.

Remember the data protection act its there to protect you, and companies like this can't actually process data that will affect your credit worthiness, which its what they are doing.

Reinstate them in six years.

Its a statement of history, so will recorded missed or late payments. You can't alter that unless it's incorrect.

That's it, just search for the info you need out ask for advice on how to remove a default. Some people have been very successful.and read the data protection act, and research how to serve a notice, you can do this yourself legally, remember its your data so make sure you manage the people that use it.

above is a good thread to start, a bit out dated now, but does give some good information. There is more up to date methods where someone basically stopped the credit reference agency processing any iformation on him at all.

Even if you've cleared the balance and closed the account it will still show on your record for 6 years.

The lenders cant actually see the account or the history of it, all they see is the defaults
