Im currently looking at a FFRR and trying to decide on petrol or v8 diesel power, my budget will get me a 3.6 diesel or a SC...car will be mainly a to and from work and the odd family day out.

Are there any issues with either the SC or the 3.6 diesel and what economy could I expect out of each...I've had a FFRR before which cost a bit in maintenance but I've not been put off smile...

Any advice guys

The S/C is the ultimate FFRR, but the V8D gets the newer gearbox, is very refined & gives you mid 20's MPG compared to the teens with the S/C.

Supercharged is a fun car but you'll be stopping lots to fill it up!

3.6TDV8 is a brilliant all rounder. smile

To answer your question:

TDV8 (3.6) should return about 21-24 on mixed
SC should return about 16-20 on mixed

S/C urban driving is more like 14 unless you have a light foot then 16/17.

On a motorway run you'll see 21mpg, 24mpg can be achieved with very careful throttle.

TDV8 is better, 4.4 is even better than the 3.6, maybe go for a higher mileage 4.4TDV8 to save costs then your lower mileage will even out over the ownership?

Of course you can save oodles on a S/C so if you can persuade the missus to not moan about fuel costs and take the saving on purchase price then that'll get you a newer, lower mileage, better specced and better looked after car imho.... just be prepped for along wait when selling (or big loss)

Im going to go against the grain. If it were either the 3.6 or 4.4 tdv8 against the 4.2 SC Id pick the deisels every time.....and bizarrely that comes from a person whose had 2 superchargers!

The deisels are loads more wafty and give better performance unless you are really gunning it (which to me seems to be at odds with the ffrr character). They even sound ok...bit like a classic 3.9

Add in better economy and residuals its a bit of a no brainer imo.

If we were talking about the 5.0 sc it would be a different story though as its worlds ahead of the older 4.2

Supercharged is great, but driven with a heat right foot can get the mpg into single digits.

The diesel version is 9.5/10 of a supercharged Range Rover, and could go to 11/10 if the 3.6 is chipped....

If it was me I would get a 3.6 diesel, and if the performance was insufficient get it chipped
