A spot of advice needed please chaps, garage woes
Discussion
Hi all,
The problem I am currently facing is my Peugeot 206 GTI 180 has a oil leak which I knew about when I bought the car, which I know rings alarm bells, however I was told it was just the seal on the oil filter. So I bought the car in good faith and other than the oil leak, the car isn't bad for a run around.
Once I bought the car, I booked it in for the leak to be fixed with my local mechanic. I have been going to this chap since I was 17, so for a couple of years now and he hasn't let me down. He even drops my car off at my house when I am at work, result.
When I first dropped the car off at the garage I was told it was definitely the oil filter leaking, which I thought was fair enough. Two people have had the same opinion, so I had that replaced. The next day there was oil dripping from the bottom of the filter, so I phoned my mechanic up again and he said for me to drop it off again. Which I did and the next diagnosis was the oil cooler which is causing the leak. I did a bit of googling and it seems a few people have had this as well, so I thought it sounded plausible and went ahead with the repair. The oil cooler wasn't exactly cheap and I was only going ahead with the repair, as I trusted my mechanics advice and I'm annoyed with oil drops on my driveway. Today I took the car out for a run and it's f
king leaking again..... To say I was pissed off would have been a major understatement... So my car needs to go back in again, which means I have to catch another taxi to my local train station and then the train to get to work. Which isn't ideal and bloody frustrating!
So, do I have to stomach another bill or what else can be done? I'm fed up of this oil leak (albeit a small one) and I'm fed up of it not being fixed! How hard can it be to find the route of a leak? I am also fed up of paying for parts which haven't fixed the problem. In fact one more thing I should mention, before taking the car out today there was a droplet of oil on the end of the filter, I thought (wishful thinking) it was just left over from the previous days in the week when I have driven the car. How I was wrong!
As the guy is decent I thought I would ask on here first to see how I should deal with my problem, as I don't want to burn my bridges.. But I want my car fixed and not to keep taking my wallet out for pointless part fixing. I want to sell the car and can't sell it with an oil leak, it just isn't fair on the next owner.

Give him a chance to fix it again, if it is the oil cooler that's (still )leaking then he ought to be able to put that right.
You might have to stomach the taxi cost; for the sake of the aggro and being able to use that mechanic again in the future.
But if the oil cooler has been replaced and I'm guessing the pipes leading to it have been replaced as part of the kit, I am not sure what else could be 'wrong` with the cooler? You might have to stomach the taxi cost; for the sake of the aggro and being able to use that mechanic again in the future.
Are these engines prone to oil leaks? If so, I will flog it on once this one has been fixed. I am not sure what it is about a leak, but it drives me up the wall

Not necesserily. Aftermarket oil coolers come with pipes/hoses. In your case, they may have just replaced the actual cooler and not the pipes/ hoses going to it. Are these engines prone to oil leaks? It could also be something dripping onto the oil filter from high up in the engine.

Oh right, I didn't know this. I thought it would all come as one pack. Well I will be taking the car back to the garage next week and if it is one of the pipes after paying £118 for the cooler itself, I will NOT be paying for any replacement pipe. It's only fair, right? It could also be something dripping onto the oil filter from high up in the engine.

This is a really bad attitude to have when getting things fixed on a ten yr old car. Either buy a new car with an all inclusive manufacturers warranty or realise that older cars can have problems and fixing them is not a simple case of driving in, getting it fixed and its perfect again.

That's a bit unfair isn't it? Whilst I grant you that 10 year old cars in general have more things that tend to go wrong, fixing the things that do go wrong should not be a long, drawn-out game of "guess the problem" whether the car is 1 year old, 10 years old or 50 years old. It's not the OP's fault that the garage is not capable of diagnosing a leak correctly and he's within his rights to expect them to be able to; he is after all paying for the expertise and experience. If you don't think you know what the problem is then say so and agree a way forward! You can't claim to have found the fault on three different items on 3 different occasions and expect the customer to still be happy with the level of service and expertise.Either buy a new car with an all inclusive manufacturers warranty or realise that older cars can have problems and fixing them is not a simple case of driving in, getting it fixed and its perfect again.
