This always intrigues me that the 6.208 litre is somehow a 6.3 litre ???
It intrigues me how the engine size of a BMW actually bears no relation to what the model name says.

Why is it "different" ?

SLSs are comparitively common compared to a SLR Mclarensmile

Probably not the thread for mentioning this, but when I was a young(er) lad I had a Clio which was 1.149, but called a 1.2.

Yeah. I mean the 325 has a 2.5 litre engine.
The 540 has a 4.0 litre engine.
850 had a 5.0 engine

IIRC Mercedes said they decided on 63 as it sounded better than 62!

In that case then surely it should be a 6 litre as it's the nearest round number. biggrin

I was always under the impression it was rounded up, or down depending what was closest. So the Merc should be a 6.2.

I think they use the '6.3' for nostalgia, harking back to the big old 6.3's of the seventies.

In the Merc's case they are taking liberties to tie the current AMG range in with their historical cousins, the first of which was a 6.3 litre V8 in a S class body.

With BMW, it's a case of what used to be a way of naming models carrying over with a different meaning but similar absolute numbers being used. Where the last 2 digits of the model actually did indicate engine capacity, it now simply should be read as a sequence indicating a hierarchy.

Both could be called misleading, perhaps, but personally I think they are not deliberately so.
