Does your car upset your neighbours?
Discussion
Mine does.
The garage I rent faces lots of flats, and as my car is quite noisy (last measured at over 124db) I got a few complaints from residents for the noise made as I reversed into the garage.
I rent at a great rate, I'm not going to annoy them and lose my garage, so this is the solution. Takes a few seconds to fit so no hardship.

Anyone else had neighbour issues? Be nice to know I'm not alone

I was always aware of the noise so made a point of being as quiet as possible, even parking it on the road at home if I needed to leave early rather than start up at the garage.
But, as you say, I don't need the grief and now everyone is happy. I don't like to cause anyone upset if I don't have to.

Funnily enough, I think it may do.
One chap up the road approves, but then he has a speed triple.
I've had some weird conversations about "me having money..." (I don't!)
Edit: re the silencers. I saw a chap giving his Griff the beans going into Llandudno today. Sounded like a cross between an F1 car and a hurricane. Sad that the net curtain brigade don't appreciate your gift to them.

Nobody on my car has anything remotely interesting - couple of MX-5s down the road, but with hard tops and driven by middle aged women. A sea of banality otherwise.
Having said that, I haven't had any complaints or funny moans all the time we've been here and the 900 turbo is very noisy, as of course is the TVR. These days I am in the 9000 99% of the time though which is pretty quiet.

And yes, despite being shiny, they look awful!
So is it naturally noisy or did you fit an aftermarket exhaust? I'm assuming full decat? And then you fit those mufflers/silencers? Is it not worth going back to standard exhaust setup and just telling them "it is what it is".

They look just the job for when I start my Rover V8 for the first time after the rebuild. It'll be on a stand and I only have the exhaust manifolds so far. I'll be making an exhaust once I've made the rest of the trike...Do you mind if I ask where you got them?
No, my Impreza has a custom amde exhaust which is a bit louder than the old one but it's not offensive like some are. I often finish work in the early hours and I always reverse my car onto my drive, so it's just more polite not to have something that makes a load of noise. My neighbours are quiet sorts too who don't give me loads of grief when I get in off nightshift so I thought it best to play ball.
I'm currently moving house and I'll need to line my car up to reverse it onto my drive there too, though it will take longer as I'll have to guide it in between the hedges on either side of the drive. I don't need something really noisy, as long as it sounds nice enough when I'm driving it I'm happy.
A friend of mine has a custom made exhaust on his car and it really is ridiculously noisy. It sounds great when the car is going at full chat, though it wouldn't surprise me if it was upwards of 125db. Round the doors it must be a nightmare. Luckily, he has a private garage away from his house where he can hide the car, though I gather he has to put it away quickly to avoid causing upset. It really is a bit excessive, though I doubt he'll stick with that sort of thing forever. He is lucky to have a garage for it.
Through work I've heard of cars being damaged before as a result of dispute arising over noisy exhausts. One person makes a complaint, someone gets a s.59 notice or alternatively, they are spoken to but nothing happens. Next week, noisy car is covered in brake fuild or has the tyres slashed. No doubt you could work out who had done the damage though there is usually no evidence and no-one gets done for it. If the noisy car isn't written off it's usually got a stock exhaust fitted within a few days. I should note that I don't mind noisy exhausts at all. Hearing 124db reversing into a garage or a drive once a day wouldn't bother me in the slightest, but sometimes it is wise to avoid picking fights with NIMBYs!

Straight through pipes with decat
Silencers are only used to get in/ out of the garage not on the road. This means happy residents and a happy driver with a noisy car.
I don't even tighten them up, just slip them on and off when at the garage.
OK I suppose if they just pop on and you can remove them when you are out of the vicinity then it's a pretty easy fix, just remembering them all the time I suppose. Our neighbour has a Harley and it is the usual put put put loud sound which if started after 8pm will pretty much wake all the kids. We just learn to live with it and it's not used often so it's hardly a nuisance.Silencers are only used to get in/ out of the garage not on the road.
