Evo VI buying guide?
Discussion
I'd have put this in Jap Chat but it's usually pretty desolate like the Sahara desert most of the time.
So following on from the what car thread on behalf of a mate he's decided on an Evo 6.
Now I'm not too bad with cars so I've advised him on most of the pitfalls to do with the servicing and cost of parts but he's just wondering if there are any other things he should look out for?
Any bits of advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!

Be prepared for back problems!! The Evo6 is very raw, loud and stiff. Service intervals are 4500 so be prepared for decent size annual maintenance bills, ime clutches don't last long and quite costly to replace.
Lots of imports and lots of poor examples.
If you do what I did you'll spend 18 months to find the perfect one then decide its not the car for you (your friend)

You need to head over to http://www.lancerregister.com/ for all things Evo.
I enjoyed my Evo VI TME but the 6 monthly service intervals got a bit tiresome.

As with most cars of this age, watch out for rust underneath as they're not undersealed from the factory.
If it's a GSR (with the trick rear diff) make sure the AYC light comes on when you turn the ign on / start the car and goes out after a few seconds. Also, make sure it doesn't come on after a spirited drive.
Fuel cut is also a common problem, easily fixed (usually a worn turbo wastegate actuator) but it's a bargaining chip. Put your foot to the floor in fourth or fifth and see if it accelerates smoothly, if it feels like it hits a brick wall then that's fuel cut (or you actually hitting a brick wall at the stupid speed you'll be doing by then).
Worn seat bolsters, seats that seem to go back on their own, whiny transmission.
They're a joy to own.
Saying all that, I'd never sell mine.
HTH,
John.
