It seems my parent's 2002 Vectra has got to the point where it's costing far too much to repair and they are getting a little frustrated with it. The electronics are screwed and £500 has just been spent attempting a repair with no success. We're pretty tight for money but my dad may consider spending up to £2000 on a replacement. Fairly boring, I know.

Requirements are:

  • 5 doors (no saloons)
  • Good rear legroom
  • Decent mileage
  • Low running costs
  • Not a Vauxhall!
Hit me with some suggestions please!

My first thought was a Focus.

What about a Civic, or an Octavia/Leon?

Or a bit more left field and "unreliable", Alfa Romeo 147.

Lots to choose from in this range, might be a bit boring though.

Honda Accord Type-R.

Don't laugh! It can act as a fine family car, or a trackday weapon. Frugal, reliable and cheap to insure if your old man has some NCB. Go on, suggest it to him....I dare ya! hehe

Crap...Just noticed the saloon part. How about this lovely hatchback example?

Even the Executive model is a brilliant drive, and will quite easily out perform a Focus. The reliability and build quality puts the Germans to shame as well. Could be worth a look?

mg zt-t or mg zt diesel. Very reliable engine will have a good spec. Have owned one for several years and not had any issues with it. stay away from the 1.8 well its good just for a non maintenance point of view the V6 2.5, v8 4.8, and the diesels are very reliable. Only the 1.8 is prone to head gasket failure the others are not

Generally a very good car and worth a drive, a lot of car for the money and parts are not hard to get hold of. The diesel engine is a bmw lump and chews the miles up.

Just a thought but its worth a look.

Some thing like this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4022842.htm but there are lots on ebay, autotrader etc just depends on what you are after. I find the auto a really nice drive and the v6 is good fun and easy to own and drive. Very good, safe family car

I currently have a zt-t diesel and a zt-t v6 2.5l and tbh they are both very good cars, the diesel is not as refined but for the money you are getting something quite special. I always like the zt/75 from the day it came out (I am 29 and not quite yet and old fart) and I am really pleased I own one and have no regrets. The V6 I have has side air bags and for that reason is an ncap 5 rated car, it feel safe on the road. I am often stopped by people at car parks who want to know more about the cars and are generally shocked at the price paid for so much car. Always for me a real good feeling car

Rover 75/MGZT diesel (touring if applicable).

Very comfortable, good reliability, and BMW engine/build quality.

I can't see a £2000 car of this type lifting you out of the situation you are in now. You are going to be buying similar cars from the same sort of generation as a 2002 Vectra so just as likely to have issues.

'nuvva vote for something big 'n' Swedish: S60 if they want a saloon and can be flexible with the 5-door requirement, or V70 if 5 doors are a must, with added load lugging. Just avoid the autos (go bang, cost a lot).

1.8 litre petrol Focus. Had two and never had a major problem with either, just usual wear and tear. Second one is on 124k at the moment and still going strong.

Mk3 Mondeos seem to be good value aswell.
