Being the serial car changer I am, I'm always wavering between 4x4's and sports cars.

In an effort to have a vehicle that combines aspects of both, I recently test drove a Cayenne S, Touareg V10 and also had a look at an ML55 AMG. I didn't like the interior of the ML and was worried about reliability, the Touareg might have been a contender but looked like it hadn't been cared for, but the Porsche was nice all round and an excellent drive.

In the end I bought the Cayenne S for the princely sum of 9k! It is a 1 owner car with 95K on the clock and full Porsche service history, so hoping it will be fine. It certainly drove very well, and had the steering wheel mounted tiptronic buttons which I really liked.

Actually this will be my 5th (lower value) Porsche, and I'm hoping it won't cost as much as some of the previous ones have!

If anyone on the forums runs a similar vintage (2003) Cayenne S, I'd love to hear your opinions and / or stories.

Thanks,

Philip.

Have a similar vintage (2004) cayenne turbo.

Fantastic machine that is quick, comfortable and can take the whole family.

Thanks for the replies - seems like it as the right decision!

On the subject of tyres, how much was it for a set of four (approx). I'll certainly need to change them before the winter.

Thanks!

...interesting I also like Toyota's but - do they do any SUV's that perform like a Cayenne though...?

Toyota do not seem to bring anything with any performance to the European market.

Perhaps not a big issue, but don't the Hankooks have the incorrect speed rating at that tyre size - 'V' rather than 'Y'?

You're right, sorry, but isn't the minimum specified as Y?

No idea.

I don't plan on doing >168mph so no worries ... pretty sure the car doesn't go that fast anyway !

I reckon you were dead on when you said 'not a big issue'. wink

What about the load ratings ?

The load ratings for the higher speed tyres are normally higher.

With a Cayenne, you might not need the higher speed rating, but you will need the required load rating.

Load rating is 980kg, so enough for the cayenne with a Boxster strapped on top of it at a sustained speed of 168mph (which it can't even do in any case).

Well picked up the Cayenne yesterday, and loving it! It has done nearly 100k miles, and there's not a scratch on it, and no squeaks, rattles or anything else untoward - it's like a new car! Talk about build quality - very impressive!

I filled it up with regular unleaded, but I see in the manual it says something about not getting the power / economy unless you use 98 RON unleaded or better? Is there any noticeable difference to the power / economy between normal and 'super' unleaded? Please let me know! Thanks.

Luke.

Even on a Z4 2.2i, I had seen benefits of using super unleaded. Measured brimmed tank to brimmed tank. It cost me less to use the super and the car sounded better.

Do your own research, run through 3-4 tankfuls before deciding - and measure cost per mile, brimmed tank to brimmed tank. I also found that Shell V-Power gave me the best MPG, while the car felt as smooth or smoother than other super unleaded ones.

In my E92 M3, I used mostly Tesco Momentum 99, as Shell was too hard to find where I lived and worked. After my previous experience with the Z4, and the M3 being what it is, I didn't even bother trying normal unleaded.

I was actually looking more at ML55's but decided to test drive the Porsche at a local garage, just as a comparison. It just blew me away with the comfort and luxury - it has enough power, and it's the easiest and most relaxing car I have ever driven whilst still being fun when required.

Needless to say I didn't bother with the ML....
