Just had a call from a mate who is stuck in Silverstone carpark but found his nice new 640d doesnt have a towing hook in the tool kit. You can imagine the amount of assistance he's going to get once the grand prix has finished will be pretty much zero.

Firstly, there isn't a secret compartment in the F12 where the hook would be kept?

Secondly, any ideas of other towing hooks that would fit without damaging the existing hole?

I'm not sure about the F12s but my tow hook is in a little leather case in the battery compartment(under the boot floor). Worth a look?

1) read the manual? surely the user manual will give some clue as to where the tow-hook is to be found

2) i'd guess, anything recent and BMW, if those germans know what they are doing, they would fit the same towhooks to the entire line, no sense in using different ones for different models.

3) call the BMW dealer, i dont know how BMW UK does things, but over here buying a new car will get you some assistance when in trouble from the brand, the least they could do is have a guy in van drop by with the proper tow-hook, if they indeed forgot to fit one to the car.

If he does find it, remind him it's probably a left handed thread!

Towing hook should be in the pouch under the boot floor.

Yup, pouch in boot. Sometimes hidden in the tool kit that lives in one of those cubby holes on the left or right hand side of the boot trim.

Either that or in the glovebox.
