Hi, I had a test drive in a 1999 mx5 1.8 today and a couple of things to ask

First the abs light comes on and off but brakes seem fine guy said it needs a new left hand sensor is this expensive

2 nd from tick over as you put your foot down to rev the engine it splutters then goes smooth and seems fine
When driving you only notice if you try to pull away in 2nd once it's moving it doesn't notice, could this be a ht lead or more

If anyone can be of any help be great thank you

Try pulling away in 1st? Did they clean under the bonnet, if it's a misfire type symptom, it may just be some water in the plugs....

Camshaft sensors seem quite a common problem?

Is it at a dealer or private?
ABS sensors are pretty cheap and easy to replace. If they know what the problem is, why haven't they already replaced it?
The hesitation sounds like HT leads which are pretty cheap but it could be coil pack, engine temp sensor, CAS, TPS, O2 etc. all of which take a bit more work and money.
Unless they can fix the problems just walk away.

It's a private sale, the price reflects doing a bit of work, but not if runs in to many hundreds

Hard to say from a post on a forum. Best case scenario it would cost £50 or so. Worst case is many hundreds. The ABS light might just need a sensor but it might need a new ABS pump. The misfire might only need HT leads but it might be anything up to head-gasket failure. It would have to be around £1k to be worth the risk. If it really is going to be cheap to fix they would be better off doing it themselves.

Thanks for your help, they were my thoughts look at worse way, he may have had a price on the work and decided to get rid of it, so I have offered £1000 if it's just. Sensors it's a good deal
