I'm considering updating my body to a 7d. Is it really that much better than the 550 and 600 even though it's a much older camera?

If it is, is it worth upgrading his year? Are there any rumours regarding a new camera?

I don't want to go full frame yet as I have a couple of decent crop lenses. And the price differential to a full frame is quite massive!

Any thoughts?

Thanks

The 7D has been around a while but its still a very capable camera.

When you say better than the xxxD range - in what respect ?
For example its focus system is better. From memory I believe it has the same sensor as the 60D but has better processing (hence higher frame rates).

You could upgrade and see no benefit, it all depends what you shoot and what lenses you have.

There is a new firmware coming for the 7D next month (I think) with some improvements and new features. Sort of says to me that a replacement is some way off, although there have been rumours for 18 months of a replacement they seem to be based on people guessing more than any firm proof.

8 FPS, dual processor, superior AF is what you get in a magnesium alloy body and a fixed glass live view screen. I love mine and really looking forward to the v2 firmware update (especially for the video manual volume control).

If you don't need these things, you may as well stay with what you've got and buy some EF glass for your FF upgrade.

I think the 7D is one of the best crop sensor camera bodies around but whether it's worth upgrading depends on what you have now and why you want to upgrade it?

Which body do you have just now ? If an xxxD why not upgrade to a 60D ?

As an all rounder the 7d is still the best crop body outside of the 1dmk4. D7000 has a better sensor but the rest isnt as good.

Its AF, controls, viewfinder, speed/fps etc are all still class leading.

But it depends on what your shooting , how much difference it will make.

I think the 7d IS that good. I've shot so much variety since I have had it and I've never thought that the 7d is out of it's depth, that cant be said for me tho! I haven't had much in the way of comparison but that being said, i've never had a need to look elsewhere.

Shameless plug coming up...I have a 7D up for sale. Very low use, boxed as new and unmarked. Have lenses and accessories also for sale.

Let me know if are/become interested.
