Militant Cyclists

I know this has been done to death, but I've had two recent encounters with groups of cyclists that has left me a tad confused and bewildered. I won't bore with too much detail, but suffice to say that on both occasions a large group (20-30) of lycra clad gladiators were taking up half the road by riding 3 or 4 abreast with a resultant tailback in the order of 10 to 15 vehicles who simply could not get past. As I watched from the back of the queue, those who attempted a pass were roundly jeered at, as though we should all be happy to pop along at 25mph. I don't get it, I cycle most Sundays with 4 or 5 mates and we go two abreast, move over if we hear a car coming and all is fine. Have I just been unlucky or has war been declared while I was at the paper shop?

There are idiots on bicycles, just like there are idiots driving cars. I fear it could be quite messy if the two groups met.

I'm glad I live in an area where this sort of thing doesn't happen.

When I go to visit some friends in Surrey I'm amazed how selfish some weekend cyclists there are, but then at that proximity to London everyone seems to be more selfish.

To be fair, there exists within cycling, a certain type who see it as their god given right to take up the while road, and are arrogant, rude and abusive(i suspect because they are in a large group), and these people cause all cyclists to be tarred with the same brush

And yes, i am fully aware that within motoring there are certain types who are just as bad, if not worse than the lycra mafia. Again, they cause all motorists to be branded as lunatics and aholes by cyclists,walkers etc
