Need new Vac Advance
Discussion
Hi,
I have a 1996 Chim 4.0 and my vac advance has packed up. Can anyone please advise if this part is available seperate from the dizzy or do i require a new dizzy complete? If so anyone know a part no or a supplier other than TVR...
Ive been looking through the threads and have seen a few saying to simply block up the hole and dont use it...What effect will this have?
Thanks

A non functioning vac advance will ruin your part-throttle economy. The purpose of advancing the ignition in moderate to high manifold vacuum conditions (i.e: at part-throttle - which is most of the time) is to enable the use of a leaner mixture, which burns more slowly and therefore needs to be ignited earlier to produce optimum power. This is why many racing distributors dispense with this whole system, as part throttle running and economy under these conditions is relatively insignificant (at least in short races etc). Usually the vacuum unit is available separately, I've certainly replaced several in the past tho' not on the electronic RV8 dizzy, but the set up is the same basically. (usually looking at around £30 ish, from memory a few years ago on my Jag V12 with digital EFI).

I posted this last Fri when you asked ?? Did you try a TVR Dealer/Independant then ???
Have you tried either Rimmer Bros: www.rimmerbros.co.uk/cgi-bin/rimmer?findpart&PartID=RTC3201&Page=v8engine/ignition
Or,
RPI engineering: www.rpiv8.com/carbs-2.htm
It would be nice to know if they are helpful suggestions..............or am I/others just wasting time typing

I replaced mine a couple of years back - it is certainly available seperately. I got mine from a TVR dealer to ensure that is was the correct one - it wasn't particularly expensive either and they had it on the shelf.
Unless you know for certain what you are buying it's usually worth a call to a dealer at least to check their prices - they are sometimes the cheapest place around.

I have replaced a few(well 3 actually) on my cars, two on Rangies and one on my last Griff. They have a part number stamped on them.Never really noticed any difference with or without connected, but then in a TVR you are probably not going to be looking for economy. My Griff i run without it connected to improve low rev, low load conditions, i guess it doesnt like too much advance at low revs, 2000 rpm.
