The passenger side clunks down ok when i put the alarm on, but the drivers side doesnt?? Is it common for the solenoids to need replacing?

Check the door switch on the cill at the bootom of the door is operating correctly. Also check you've got a rubber blob on the door to push the button in otherwise the system will assume the door is still open. They get a lot of stick down there and fail regularly.

Pretty sure the precats dont have the button blob on the door.
If one solenoid is locking , the chances are its not the door pin switches, so probably a dicky solenoid.
If you replace it dont worry about buying a 5 wire, only the motor wirea are used......
