Afternoon all,

Mrs G used to own a 2.5 Boxster many years ago and loves the Cayman shape. She currently drives a Beetle Cab (I know!) and wants to move onto something a bit more special. We would be looking around the £20k mark, she does around 7,000 miles a year. So, would we get a nice Cayman or Cayman S?

What should I be looking out for? Is a warranty a must? Any known problems?

Thanks G

Bennachie

I bought a Cayman 2.7 last year, 2006 model with 20,000 on the clock. Cost me £18,250 and can honestly say it's the best car I've ever bought (and I've had lots). There are lots about for under £20,000 and they don't suffer the same engine problems as the Cayman S

Do it now ........

Common faults too look for are play in steering rack ends. Leaking steering racks (dampnes on the rack boots), corrosion to inner face of brake discs, exhaust tail pipes clamps cracked, and of course oil wetness between the engine and gearbox.

There good cars if maintained correctly. Ensure FSH!

Hope this helps

I have had exactly the same experience, it beats the 991 I had briefly hands down for pure driving enjoyment in my honest opinion.

Cayman is going to a new home tomorrow sadly, but if I get bored without it in a year or two I'm sure I'll come back for another.

I am also considering buying a Cayman S for around the £20k mark. So the advice to have a warranty... if you buy from an independant you would, I assume, need to buy a warranty from Porsche? Is that fairly straightforward? Or are there lots of pitfalls if the car has non Porsche bits'n'bobs? I am not looking for a heavily modified car. But some on the market have sports exhausts of one make or another.

I did check the Porsche website which mentions a standalone one or two year warranty. So that would be the option? With a pre-inspection to pay for too?

Yes, they have to inspect the car - at your expense. Anything non-Porsche would have to be removed. Tyres, for example, would almost certainly have to be N-rated. They might also require a service before allowing the warranty, even to replace things like brake pads that aren't actually covered. It is, however, the most comprehensive and reliable warranty you can get for a Porsche.

I did just notice the locked thread on warranties. I'll give that a read too.
