Found a car I fancy. £6K The only one I've found across PH, trader, Gumtree & ebay with the right spec and the right mileage.

Typically, It's a four hour drive to view and an 8 hr wasted trip if it no good!
I have had a chat with the seller (trader) but i've found before that doesn't guarantee anything.

Would you?

Without hesitation. My previous car I went and got from a chap in Essex and yesterday I booked a flight to see a car in Devon. I'm in Aberdeenshire.

If a car is ten a penny then yes, just get local. However, if you're after something rare then it is always worth it to travel.

I did a 5 hour drive each way and an overnight stay for a car I wanted a few years back.

The OH wasn't too impressed, mind...

Yes, have done many times. 3-4 hours is normal enough to find the right car.

I flew down to Portugal, spent a week sorting the car (it had been stored for eight years) and then drive it back. Quite an adventure really.

What's worth travelling that far for?, pray tell?

Longest was plymouth to the other side of brighton, but if that car hadn't worked out then I would have gone all the way up to kendal for the next one in the same spec.

I probably would yes. Although I'd want to get a good gauge of the seller (trader or not) first. And maybe some specific pictures, at the end of the day if there honest and you don't continually badger them, they have nothing to lose by being honest and helpful.

Is it quite a rare car if its the only one you can find??

Hundred miles absolute max, same for bikes. I deliberately wouldnt choose anything that was so rare i had to look further than that.

Because of the north south divide I see a large price difference in the same cars. I have regularly flown to pick up a car that saved me hundreds instead of picking one up down the road.

Depends how much your time is worth to you.

Just make sure you do your research beforehand and you will be fine.

I bought my classic from Poole (travelling from Newcastle) and had no problems...in fact it was an epic day! Before I travelled, I had made sure that I had seen an awful lot of pictures as well as chatting to the seller in depth.

I did it by hiring a car for a one way commute and drove it there to drive back the classic the same day. It was a loooong day but well worth it (set off at 01:45 and got back at 22:30).

I suppose it boils down to how much you want the car and how readily available they are.

I live in Northumberland and my current car is the furthest I've travelled (Middlesborough). I'd go further if it was a rare car I desperately wanted though.

I always seem to do it.
I love the mini-adventure of going halfway across the country to get a car.
I've wasted my time once on a 6 hour round trip to buy a 7 series but it was completely my fault for not doing my research. There was nothing wrong with the car it was just a non-sport which I was utterly underwhelmed with.
ANyway, do it.

I live in the Midlands and have travelled to Surrey, Leeds, other-Yorkshire for a car - most often you write the whole day off.

Worthwhile for something you might live with for a number of years.

I found my XJR via the net (PH classifieds to be exact), flew from Suffolk to Inverness to buy the car & then drove it back to Suffolk.

A great day & fun road trip to bond with my new car ;-)

Car was about £2500 cheaper than anything closer that had all the necessary work (for an XJR) done, so the cost of flights & fuel meant I was still about £2200 "up"...

Certainly anywhere within the UK if it were the right car - and even if turned out to be the wrong car.
Done it numerous times over the years.
Live in the Dundee area and travelled for various cars to Sunderland, Derby, Hull, Clacton, Cardiff to name but a few.
Biggest waste of time was a journey to Birmingham many moons ago.
Hired a car, one-way, with the option of returning it to Dundee.
Just as well.
Left the house at 1:30am and drive to Birmingham.
Approx 370 miles later arrive around 8:00am.
Saw car and was so disappointed.
Guy could see I lost interest pretty quickly so started dropping the price.
Not enough, thankfully.
Within 30 mins I was on the road home.
Back in Dundee around 3:15pm.
Total time 13-14 hours.
Total distance 740 miles.
Total......waste of time.
It is getting harder to travel distances now and each time I do it I say "never again".
