Just removed one of the water rails as it has a leak and needs welding. It doesn't have any form of gasket where it meets the engine, just what looks like a small amount of sealant. Is this right?

That's not sealant - they are O rings. Try digging them out with a fine pick, they sit in a channel machined into the head. You will need to replace all eight if they are anything like the ones that came off mine. Clever Trevor had them in stock when I needed them.

Edit to correct number of O rings!

Excellent stuff. Have found them at Clevor Trevor. Why 16 though, can only see 4 per rail?

Looks like the engine paint may be disguising what's going on somewhat. I would clean it off the mating surfaces. I have some spare used seals if you want them. I replaced then but I don't think there was any need. Also, it's no big deal replacing them in the future if you need to.

Will clean everything up before putting back together. Thanks for the offer, but ordered news ones for the sake of a few quid.
