The gearbox issue has always suprised me on Mercs, the box is generally fine it seems in other kit so why the problem in the C43? Surely it's under less strain than say an S500/600 while being the same box.
Rust shouldn't be such a problem if you buy it in good condition. Clean and seal the arches for a kick off and a good lot of wax should keep it at bay.
I say go for it, though to me a W124 petrol holds more charm
The C43 gearbox is rated to 580nm (427bhp) but I think the concensus is that a lot have been driven hard and suffered. A gearbox oil change can compound the issue by freeing up debris; there are many reports of the gearbox going south within 1,000 miles of a change. There's also a seal on the gearbox which perishes allowing oil to seep from the gearbox and wick up the wires to the gearbox ECU in the footwell (though this is not just a C43 issue). If you spot oil weeping from this area it's only a £10 part from MB. Violent upchanges are normally due to a MAF sensor on its way out and not gearbox related.Rust shouldn't be such a problem if you buy it in good condition. Clean and seal the arches for a kick off and a good lot of wax should keep it at bay.

I read a lot about C43s as it's 'on my list' as a replacement for the 540i when that gives up the ghost...

Well by the end of today I may again have one of these:

Which takes me part of the way to my plan for a mini fleet.
I have emailed the seller of this 328 http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/4048572.htm although my questions on its history could have been too much.

That does look quite nice, hasn't been waxed in a while though! Strong money, it would have to be immaculate to justify that price IMO. Sports seats on an SE are always nice though.

Just to add my Ferrari wishlist
Of all the posted cars over the weekend, this is the one that make my flabber most ghasted.

In fact, I think I've finally nailed down my Ferrari barn collection:
330GTC - (as above)
550 - this one actually http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C315598
F40 - Nero, it absolutely has to be Nero.
360CS - TDF & Cream Alcantara.
