2002 - 2004 Range Rover, why not?
Discussion
I bought a new 4.8 V8 RR Vogue in 2004 and absolutely loved it. I sold it 3 years later because I could almost "hear" it depreciating, and more importantly I needed to raise some cash.
I was just looking at the current prices, which are ridiculously low. £10k seems to get a relatively low mileage (50 - 60k) full fat Vogue. So, if I was looking for a change in my daily drive, and wasn't too troubled by mpg, why shouldn't I get myself one of these beauties?
What Problems should I look out for at this age and mileage?
Does the 2002 model have the BMW power unit?
Can sensible warranties still be bought for these?
Talk me out of it - or not

my mate has just bought a 54 plate RR V8 for £11k.
i have a feeling he will wish he had'nt . the only saving grace is that its got an LPG conversion.
Why do you say that?i have a feeling he will wish he had'nt . the only saving grace is that its got an LPG conversion.
Or maybe because these have a dreadful reputation for reliability.
They can now be had from £6k upwards and that is from a dealer!
Lets be honest, its a Land Rover, so it will have its fair share problems.
Rear boot seals fail and can soak the electrics
Transmissions can fail, but I'm told that regular oil changes helpb them keep in good shape.
Air suspension can fail, but some of them are getting on a bit now, so thats fair enough.
Bushes and similar have a hard life because of the weight of the vehicle and can be pricey to replace.
A google search will reveal a buyers guide. I'm not doing that for you....

A colleague spent £4000 fixing his air suspension on a 2001 P38 V8 Rangie. I imagine it's a similar design to the 2002- system, so that's a big potential bill. Warranty companies will probably try to wiggle out of paying up on it, too - as it'll be considered a mileage dependent wear and tear issue, no doubt.

Plenty of rhetoric thanks, however I was wondering if anyone has their own, real life experiences?
Paid £6.5 k for a 4.4 Vogue a couple of months ago. Not perfect condition but perfectly decent. I guess just watch out for the usual stuff that will wear as the miles pile on. If you've had one before then you don't need to be told about the driving style or the interior I guess. If I recall correctly, these are rated one of the most unreliable cars on the road in a recent survey, and have actually overtaken the P38 and Freelander as the trouble of the LR range.
I owned one for two years - no major issues, but plently of annoying niggles. As with any car like this - a lovely image, presence, and drive - but a reliability gamble. Its a 60k car when new, and still can attract bills relative to this.

From new, mine was good, but I had the comfort of the warranty, which was used for an electrical gremlin and the front suspension, otherwise it gave me 45k miles of luxurious wafting.I owned one for two years - no major issues, but plently of annoying niggles. I fully understand the 60k car repairs, i ran an E38 750 for a while.
The comment about them being one of the most unreliable cars is a worry, and together with other research I am really starting to reconsider.

I had a 52 plate Vogue, loved every minute of it, just about to sell it and the transmission went and the gearbox, £5k later I sold it for £17k
That's rotten luck Lensey. Do you mind me asking how long did you have it and how many miles had it done when it dumped that bill on you?
Oh David, David, David..... brilliant minds and that.
I've had this yearning for the last few months and browsing the classifieds, with no real conviction I hasten to add. LR Used site even appears to have some bargains, which one would hope would come with a good pedigree and warranty.
What I fancy though is a Td6 close to 06, or by the time I get my arse into gear I can see the later V8 Diesel a better bet.
fullfatrr.com is a treasure chest of gen, though I guess you may have been there and done that
Hope your well
