Collected My M3 today .... Not a good start!
Discussion
Well I collected my M3 this lunchtime and have been gently wafting around enjoying the superb ride and amazing gearbox then.....
I pulled away from a roundabout and the car did not seem to want to change up from 1st so thinking I had put it into manual somehow I nudged the gear lever to put it back into automatic mode, now I have no idea what happened whether it was me or not if I'm being honest, but at this point I noticed the engine management light was on
I have got the car gently home and have the dealership ringing me tomorrow however I'm a bit miffed I had a nice evening planned with the wife and will now be taking the trusty Audi for this outing
The only other thing I have done is filled the car up with vpower surely that wouldn't cause an issue would it?
So the car is sat on the drive with it's disklok in place, I hope this isn't a sign of things to come!

Unless you used VPower Diesel then no, it shouldn't.I pulled away from a roundabout and the car did not seem to want to change up from 1st so thinking I had put it into manual somehow I nudged the gear lever to put it back into automatic mode, now I have no idea what happened whether it was me or not if I'm being honest, but at this point I noticed the engine management light was on

Not a great start though mate - at least the dealers should sort it out though.
The dealer have seen this once before on another M3 its a small 30p washer something to do with the camshaft basically causing some form of oil starvation #gulp#
They are currently in the process of sourcing me another car to use whilst mine is being repaired.
I am now concerned that some form of damage may have been caused, although I have only done 100 miles and it was very gently driven, thoughts??

If I heard "oil starvation" I'd be thinking "new engine". But maybe that's just me? They are currently in the process of sourcing me another car to use whilst mine is being repaired.

Good luck with this Andy.
What are the rules in the UK on rejecting a car?
My M5 has just been back at the dealers with some faults with the iDrive system that were traced to water in the boot which drowned some of the modules in the boot floor. BMW warranty doesn't cover water ingress, tossers, they built the damn thing. Only had her 2 weeks.
Let us know how your issues go with the dealer Andy, I feel your pain
Cheers

Was this an F10M? That's atrocious if so and I wouldn't stand for that. If it's an older model I went through the same thing (albeit on an X3) and this caused me to cancel the warranty in disgust. Anyway, back on topic What are the rules in the UK on rejecting a car?

Ok, firstly the dealer has been excellent so far, I can't say the same for BMW who seemed to think it was acceptable to provide me with an Enterprise rental car as a replacement for my 1 day old £50k car, the dealer stepped in though and have loaned me a 640i convertible which I hate but thats another story LOL!
I will explain best I can but I am a mechanical numpty so am reciting best I can from what I was told.
The Amber warning light was raised by 2 or 3 different sensor faults, this had occurred on another M3 that the dealer supplied. On the previous M3 the dealer spent a couple of weeks chasing a fault around replacing various sensors only to finally isolate the problem to a washer somewhere in the region of the camshaft. The symptoms of my car are identical so they have submitted something called a PUMA to BMW and were as of this afternoon awaiting authorisation to carry out the repairs which the service manager said was 6 to 8 hours labour.
I have been told I might get the car back before the weekend, failing that Monday, so it's back to waiting again like I was before I picked it up LOL!

Its an 07 M5. Sorry Andy for dropping this in your thread, I didn't realise you were talking about a new car. Good luck getting it sorted, sounds like the dealer is doing the right thing so far.

Do us all a favour and go and drive the 640i like you've stolen it! I will explain best I can but I am a mechanical numpty so am reciting best I can from what I was told.

I had a brand new Z4M coupe about 4 years ago. Picked it up from the dealers. went to the garage, filled it up with 97RON fuel and proceeded to drive 150 miles down to my brothers. Half way there, same thing, EML light on, reduced power. Felt like I was driving a Ford Ka!! Called BMW they sent a mobile mechanic to me at my brothers, who didnt speak a word of English. He reset the system and all its sensors and said everything would be fine (at least I think thats what he said) Drove home, 20 miles up the road, EML light back on, reduced power. Que extreme rant from me behind the wheel as I trundled back up the motorway at 60 mph for 4 hours. Took it straight to the dealers who eventually said it was the "knock" sensor, or modern equivalent, and that sometimes they just go "a bit funny" when you put fuel in it that it doesnt recognise.
Not saying that its going to be the same with yours but it does sound pretty similar. I would say that the car didnt skip a beat from that day forward, and I drove it like I nicked it almost every day!! If it was me, id remember you have a fantastic car, remember that the EML is there to stop the engine being damaged, and look forward to many happy hours of fun in your car wants its back. Its a complicated machine, and as long as the dealer does its job I am sure it will all be fine!
