Route Planning

Is there anything out there that will help with route planning for a fairly long cycle ride?

I know of the likes of Mapmyride, where I can click the planned route, but I am thinking more of a gps style 'this is the best route' type planner.

I am building up to doing either the Way of the Roses, or C2C, the first part of that plan is to go either Bradford to Bridlington or Bradford to Scarborough. The 'ordinary' GPS wants to send me down the A64 to Scarborough, which doesn't really fill me with joy. I was wondering if there is a more 'cycle friendly' route that could be found.

Google Maps has a cycle button on the Directions bit. I've found it a bit hit-and-miss though.

You can plan a route and then select whether you want direct route, quiet route etc. It knows all the local cycle paths as well. Its great. I just need to buy a Edge 800 so that it'll guide me through the routes!

The only bit missing from cyclestreets is I can't find a way of telling it to miss a certain feature.

Bradford to Bridlington is taking me out to York and up Garroughby Hill, which I know to be bloody steep.

If you're looking for ideas for nice routes, I find looking at people's routes on Strava tends to find commonly ridden roads (and therefore nice cycling ones)

Not particularly looking at nice routes as such.

Me and a work colleague are looking at attempting the Way of the Roses route. The current plan is to look at whether we can do it in a day, with a sponsorship plan for Help for Heroes.

Part of the planning has been suggested that we do something like a run from base just outside Bradford to either Bridlington or Scarborough. But I need a bit of help with the route to use for that run. Like I said earlier, standard sat nav tends to route you via the A64 for Scarborough.

Yes, that irritates me about Cyclestreets too. It simply doesn't understand that I'd rather go half a mile around to avoid going straight up and then immediately straight down a big hill.

On my commute, it avoids one big hill right at the start, takes me another way, then seems to work out that it has to get back going in the right direction so leads me up an even bigger one

Can't you break the route into different legs to navigate round things? Bit of a pain but it'll probably work.
