Can Mobile vans operate in the hours of darkness? I was tootling down the M180 at about midnight on Saturday and just as I passed under a bridge I noticed a van sat up there with its side door open. It was well above the level of my dip beams(due to single oncoming car) so I couldn't see it earlier for a better look. It was just a prime scamera site straight, good visibility, no traffic( I think I saw maybe 20 cars in the entire lentgh of the motorway!) etc. I was doing a steady 72, so not worried just didn't realise they could operate at night facing the headlights. Can anyone confirm or deny?

Cheers

Technically I think they can. I believe they have IR filters so oncoming headlights dont blame them (shame.....).

Oh so this is a safety feature on an otherwise empty motorway then?

I wonder how the operator would be able to form an "opinion of excess speed" though.

What's the quality of the image. I mean you have no lighting around the front of the car to illuminate the number so unless it faces the rear I'd question the clarity of the image unless someone in the know can verify this?
