Driving home this evening in the MR2 with the T-bars out I felt a bit of a lump in my throat. The car is on ebay at the moment and it ends this evening with a winning bid already in place. I don't normally get attached to cars but this one has somehow tugged at the heart strings a little!

I'm looking forward to the next one of course but a part of me wants to keep it alongside, however impossible that may be! I've never been on any monumental road trips, met my first girlfriend in it or anything cliché like that but for some reason the thought of her going is like waving goodbye to a good friend!

Sounds like I need to MTFU I know, but don't make me feel like a big girl, there must be others that have experienced this with a piece of metal?

If you don't have an emotional attachment to your car and you claim you're a motoring enthusiast...

...sell your car and try again, since you've failed.

I know what you mean, I am preparing to put my M3 Evo convertible up for sale after 6 years of ownership and I am dreading it. I love my car, the way it looks, drives, everything, just puts a smile on my face everytime I get in it. Not sure if I want it to go away from where I live so I never have to see it, or sell it to someone local so I get to see it every now and then?

I feel your pain buddy.

You're nowhere near alone! This feeling is why I limped my dying Clio a couple of miles to storage with no clutch, a broken rear window, a dent in every panel on the passenger side and half an exhaust. It was scrap for months before the clutch went really, (annoying because I crashed it the day after an £800 MoT about 4 months previously) but just looking at it made me feel guilty about thinking of getting rid. It's still there now, albeit in smaller pieces. Waiting to be put back together.

I never drive this.

Probably a dozen miles in the last 3 years. If that. I have a guy (who owned it 30 years ago) keen to buy it and I quite fancy a 205GTi. But I just can't do it.

I've had attachments to all of my cars, from the very fast, to the very slow, and the utterly crap. They all have redeeipming features, even if that is as a simple a to b car.

It's a bit weird, really. I had a 4th gen Honda Accord. Boring car. Not fast. Handled poorly, but it was comfy, and felt nice to drive regardless. It got me where I wanted to be, and was nice at the time I had it. Weird.

I'm pretty much the same.

Except the overheating 2.0 auto Scorpio with 150k on the clock that I had for a while. Wasn't sad to see that go (in a cloud of steam).

You think you've got problems. I've got 9 cars (including the car I passed my test in back in 1982).

With the exception of leased company cars, I've still got all my cars (and they're all on the road) - except for 2 - one crashed and one stolen.

I find as soon as I think about selling a car, usually because its gotten on my tits for some reason or other, I take it for a drive and it reminds me why I liked it. Its not usually enough to stop me selling it, but then I tend to be rash and get rid as quickly as I can or I think I won't go through with it. Then I usually end up regretting it anyway, but ending up with something worse or skint.

Cap doffed.

Whilst I've owned a few pigs in my time, I'd love to still own my first car.

yes

I've had my little 100HP much longer than I expected to. It would be a wrench to part with the little trier now, so I'm keeping it. It's staying as my "Monday to Friday" car and will allow me to be a bit more exotic with my next purchase. And in 20 years' time I'll be taking it to the Italian car day at Brooklands as the only 1-owner 100HP left in the world.

Pretty normal thing for a car enthusiast i think.

I've typed an advert for my 205 GTI but i can't bring myself to submit it despite my draw to something VTEC/Impreza. Maybe tomorrow i'll put it up. But probably not.

+1

Selling a car to me is like selling a pet. Hate it, rarely do it and it has got to be to the right person.

I've owned 4 cars since passing my test at 22.

Astra G - No real attachment despite being first car, was OK but very very dull to drive and look at.
Ka - fun to drive in town but basically fell apart due to rust
Cougar 2l zetec - bought as a random shed to replace the ka, actually grew to really like it and still weirdly miss it, it was slow but huge and comfortable, and looked fantastic.

Mk2 Mx5 - I *love* this car, and it will be a real wrench if/when it comes to selling up, it makes me smile almost every day.

I'll probably lose major man points for this, but f*ck it, i don't really have any... If it got stolen or smashed up, I would cry...literally.

My first two cars i got attached to and hated it when both left me. The first one got bought for spares and broken so i was the last one to drive it. I tryed replacing it with an identical one but it just wasnt the same.

The second car just wasnt getting used and i sold it for peanuts compared to what i could have got for it but i had just been made redundant and needed the ££££. I used to see it every day and hated seeing someone else driving it frown

My favorite car is going in as trade-in tomorrow, quite wistful but not 'upset' because I know I have got the maximum use I could have out of it, and moving on will allow me to do other things with the money that would otherwise be tied up in it.

Sold my two favorite cars in two weeks and feel great, life is all about the balance! I'm sure in another few years I'll be back with something equally ruinous as these two!

I bought my Sierra Cosworth in 1996. It sits in the garage under a cover, it's mint and in the last 10-12 years i've probably done no more than 2000 miles.
However i can't bare to part with it.

I've got 5 now. The last 5 cars I bought and I can't bear to get rid of any. I've got a mk1 mondeo 4x4 that I really don't need any more. It's at the back of my garage and I take it out for maybe 50 miles, once a month when it's dry. I should really sell it but I know the second I do, I'll regret it. It's probably not worth a lot and there must be 10s of thousands of better cars, but I love it.

Yep. Sold my Eunos Roadster recently, knowing it wasn't the best example and I could replace it with a better one a a later date. Boy was that hard.

My sheddy Saab 9000 bought for the daily grind has got under my skin.

I will never sell the 900 and would cry like a baby if anything happened to it laugh
