Thinking about this today. It's been around for some time now. It has roots back in the days of Mk1 Escorts et al and has now culminated into a "sport".

Every Noughtie's Max Power lad now dreams of having a drift car rather than a show car.

Surely it must have peaked though?

I think i'm starting to see less of these ruined cars around but it could be i'm just not looking.

So what do you think, on it's way out or still got years left to go?

As a competition - is it a fad and will it die? The Japanese in particular seem pretty keen on competitive drifting.

As a fashion - when the next "big thing" comes along.

It's been picked up more by the skating and BMX crowd then the chavs when it comes to paying up and doing it properly. I think it'll be around for a good long while. It's fun to do, fun to watch and has a much younger appeal than most other motorsports. I still don't really understand why people get so snobish about it.

Given it's worldwide exposure and the number of professional championships all over the world it's hardly likely to die off anytime soon. If you don't like it don't watch it, it's not like it's in all of the media all of the time, to watch it you have to actively search for it....

Indeed, i've no issue with people doing it, just wondered if the fad of every 'tard having a drift car is on it's way out.

I think they might be on their way back to show cars personally but i'm not sure.

It's proliferation was inevitable since every chav and his dog save Tokyo Drift, which has lead to many a "drift slag" look MX-5 complete with hilariously cambered "stance", stretched rims, rust (or matte paint over the rust), "stickerbombed" panels to cover up damage etc etc.

However, while the fad will die, something else will take it's place. The continual and embarrassing life of the "DUB Boiz" craze, or whatever they call themselves these days, is proof of that. Whatever the niche, there will always be guy out there who just want to go and meet up with a bunch of other like-minded guys and slide around in car parks and other public places.

I'm sure it'll limited by the number of cheap rear wheel drives available.

Although there's still plenty of E30s to go through yet, even though I believe prices are increasing for those without welded up diffs.

When it dies. biggrin A horrible, horrible death.

It's not the drifitng, it's the fad around it that does my nut in.

Interesting, I think the opposite as the drifters seem to think it is acceptable to have cable tied on bumpers/trim and have rough looking cars which lends itself well to budget modifying unlike show cars which ideally need to be faultless which costs a lot more £££
