Reply to 'Dear John' E-Mail

Just had one back from an Interview I had at a place 2 weeks ago. It is an up and coming company that keeps advertising positions and the interview went well but ultimately someone more qualified got the job.

So would you send a simple, 'I understand, thanks anyway' type reply. Or just not even bother applying there again?

I'd be graceful. Thank them for giving you the opportunity to meet with them, say that you are still very much interested in a position with them and that if the situation changes you would still be open to considering this. Then ask for feedback.

It's always a delicate one this. On the one hand your facing disappointment, but on the other, you clearly are on a trajectory and so need to maximise opportunities to support that trajectory. There's definitely a place for keeping the communication channels open with them if they are indeed part of your master plan and are an outfit you really would like to be a part of. The trick is managing it from that viewpoint rather than sounding desperate, so your wordsmithing needs a considered approach as mentioned above. Good luck!

I always send a very polite reply to these if it's from an individual and not a generic email, usually with the same basic content:

thanks for the opportunity to interview
keep me on file
contact me if anything suitable arises
any feedback or constructive criticism/advice?

never once had a reply.

This is familiar, although I understood a while ago that the types you reply with these to often have no time or care incidentally as part of their job role to remember some guy that wrote back..

I find it more beneficial to, once something comes up again I'm interested in, reply back explaining the role they have now for xxx is something you want to be considered for, and then match a reason reflecting your last application. Then they might cross-check previous apps and see your angle.
