For example a Kit car running a Q plate is SVA tested in 2005 and the Q plate issued. Are you allowed to register this car with an age compliant cherished number plate or does it always have to run the Q plate?

The Q plate has nothing to do with VOSA who carry out the SVA/IVA, but by DVLA who register it.
