Trip to America in the "Fall"

I'm going to the USA in late October with my mother to visit some friends of my late father - they live in Virginia. We're also going to Tennessee to go to Memphis, Nashville, and Dollywood. (not my choice!)

I know Virginia pretty well as I lived there for a while, but I never got down as far as Tennessee. I'm trying to work out whether there's anything to do to break up the two rather long trips we're going to have to make along the full length of Tennessee from Memphis back to Bristol. Any ideas?
